Don't know if this is the proper place to mention this, but for the last several weeks I have been watching Nova - Australia: First 4 Billion Years on PBS . . . I watch it for the science, but I also enjoy the fact that there are lots of scientists in the field Down Under, with LOTS of terrific hats

Jeff, that one is still out there I guess. I've never actually seen one in the wild. Apparently they are very elusive. The only ones I have seen were stuffed and hanging on the walls of local watering holes

Having been trying to find a good used Akubra (since a new one is still way over budget for me) I stumbled onto this in ebay. At first I was rather reluctant but since the picture was quite nice, I started bidding.. I had no high expectation but eventually I won it $33.

It's Australian Outback Collection - Jackeroo. I tried browsing in the net but failed to find information. The company exists, but the model I bought doesn't. So I wonder whether is it a vintage or not? Can anyone help with further info about the hat and the producer?

The hat came in quite dusty condition and due to rough handling the brim was quite deformed too. This is a fur felt, but quite nasty and stiff hat... with help of some water I managed to clean and fix the brim.. but oh, I hope I shaped it right, don't know much about outback hats...

What I've been thinking... did I pay too much for this hat?

I had the exact same hat in black, I purchased it at Cabelas in the early 90's and the quality was on par with today's Akubra hats. The Australian Outback Collection was an Aussie company that used to make hats and oilskin drover coats but they went belly up and the brand name was purchased by a Canadian company which still sell the drover coats and other garments including some waxed cotton caps and hats but no longer manufacture felt hats. The new company has no link with the original company other than the name and logo. I think it's a good grab for $33, I sold mine $50 about 4 or 5 years ago.

It's pretty much a tourist cheapie that would no doubt go for 30-40 bucks new, so as the man said, keep an eye out for the real thing on ebay, then flog that off, or keep it for a knockaround.

If I remember correctly, they were sold for $149.99 at Cabelas in the early 90's, definitely not a tourist trap product.
