Having been trying to find a good used Akubra (since a new one is still way over budget for me) I stumbled onto this in ebay. At first I was rather reluctant but since the picture was quite nice, I started bidding.. I had no high expectation but eventually I won it $33.

It's Australian Outback Collection - Jackeroo. I tried browsing in the net but failed to find information. The company exists, but the model I bought doesn't. So I wonder whether is it a vintage or not? Can anyone help with further info about the hat and the producer?

The hat came in quite dusty condition and due to rough handling the brim was quite deformed too. This is a fur felt, but quite nasty and stiff hat... with help of some water I managed to clean and fix the brim.. but oh, I hope I shaped it right, don't know much about outback hats...

What I've been thinking... did I pay too much for this hat?

Thats basically an Akubra Snowy River clone so you can us that as a model if you want. The Snowy River usually has more of a "dip" front and back on the brim but you can shape it to suit you and it does look good like it is if your happy with it.

Did you pay to much? Not really in the scheme of things. It's probably 100% rabbit fur and will wear like iron. I've payed as much as $125.00 US for a custom ordered Snowy River to as little as $15.00 US for almost new off Ebay. Keep looking for your Snowy River , they come up all the time on Ebay and when you find it just Ebay the Jacaroo to offset the cost. I just love all my Akubras!

Looks like a great hat to me! The styling looks good, and you done an excellent job of reshaping it.

If it is too stiff for you, you can remove some of the stiffener with isopropyl or denatured alcohol. Mark G. recommended isopropyl as a safer alternative to denatured, but either will dissolve some of the stiffener and make the hat softer and more flexible. Just be sure to use some conditioner on the sweat after dunking it in the alcohol.

It's pretty much a tourist cheapie that would no doubt go for 30-40 bucks new, so as the man said, keep an eye out for the real thing on ebay, then flog that off, or keep it for a knockaround.

Hmm... I don't know, but is it possible that a new fur felt is sold at $30-40? Anyway, looks like this is going to be a beater.. haven't tried it for outdoor activities but certainly this will be the one for use! Thanks for the info guys, how about the company itself.. any info?

I'd say it was a reasonable price for it. I found one at a flea market last August. It's slightly different than yours. The thread on it is here. I wore it during my recent fishing trip to Oregon, and was quite happy with it. It'll be my fishing/working outside/etc hat, I think.

Not too long ago I saw you were bidding on a hat I was interested in. I opted not to bid, but turned out someone else outbid you for it instead. Ah, well, that's eBay for you.

Anyway, your Jackaroo looks good, and looks good on ya. What more can you ask?

Oh, but the hat you found in flea market is an Akubra! With box! Much greater deal certainly... Mine isn't Akubra. And well, I didn't wrote it wrong as you can see in the pic: It's Jackeroo, not Jackaroo maybe they could've gotten into dispute with trademark...

BTW, which hat do you mean? Is it the Open Road type? If that's the hat, well, I feel rather sorry to lose it, since the final price is still within my budget.. I was just ... well, like most of you have experienced, ... sniped

But so far, most of my experience in bidding a nice hat is, the price usually has flown high to the sky first... I wouldn't stand any chance

lol I think most of us got it wrong, Yohanes, judging by the responses! I'd forgotten about the Jackeroo. It still looks good on you, whatever the name.

I think it may have been the OR type; as I recall, the winning bid wasn't much higher than yours. I do use a sniping site myself; lets me put in the highest I'm willing to go without driving the price up. Plus, I don't have to worry about being at my computer monitoring the final bidding.

Jackeroo Hat

Just received mine from eBay u.k, mine is in black, brand new for £10.00. Just needed a light steaming to set the sloping brim and crown as i wanted it, and like yours it looks awesome. I was very impressed by the quality of the hat, although i have never had an Akubra brand hat, i am very happy with this one and will be on the lookout for another bargain, possibly a brown one just for the change of seasons. A brush will be on the list as well, these hats are worth looking after, but not so expensive as to sit on the hat shelf as many more expensive ones do. My advice to anyone, who like me, is too old for baseball caps anymore, is to do what you should have done years ago, buy a hat that looks good to you, and feels good on your head and remember, you can still buy a little class if you look hard enough. Use it and love it my friend !!

In all seriousness, in was under the impression that jackeroo is the model name, and the felt is probably hare or a blend. I'm sure others around here will know for sure. Nice looking lid.

That was my first thought too!

Seriously though, that's a nice looking hat. I had a western hat years ago that was almost it's twin, same color and band, just no dents in front. Great find Brother Cavefish.

A jackaroo is the Australian equivalent of a farm hand. I'd be very surprised if the hat was made out of real jackaroos lol.

Jeff, I didn't know Jackalopes could be found in South Dakota. I thought they were only indigenous to Texas. At least that is what I was told by an older cousin on my first hunting trip.

All kidding aside, the Jackeroo is an Akubra model name and has nothing to do with the felt. Below is a link to them on Everything Australian.
