No, no...no debtors or murderers in my family tree. Closest I come is one ancestor sent out for plotting to assasinate George III (so an unsuccessful would-be murderer). Most were more along the lines of the one sentenced to death for stealing a bolt of calico...or rather, intending to steal a bolt of cloth that never actually left the shop where he worked. Most were Irish.

Of course, there were also a load of free settlers, including a Swedish ring-in who came out in the 1870s, struck it rich in the gold rush, opened a lot of hotels in WA and sent money home to enrich the family back there to the extent that they *still* hold us in high regard. And yet more Irish immigrants making good. But we don't talk about the free settlers much...they're sort of the black sheep. We cherish the convicts!

Went to too many barbies (BBQs for our o'seas friends) over the weekend. I'm still waddling today and I don't think I'll need to eat for the better part of the week!
