Well now C-dot - it is Australia that enters each new day a full day or so ahead of the US (yes I'm afraid you get our second-hand days!). It follows then that if we lead your part of the world into each day then the same applies to seasons. It is Uncle Sam, therefore, who is 'backward' in this here chronological race!

As for felt hats - generations of cowboys in both our countries have worn their felt hats in the heat of summer and the cold of winter. My life is much less harsh than theirs, so I cope with felts all year just fine. In summer I do supplement my headware with straws and lighter, unlined felts - but my felt hats still ride the melon in summer.

It's very hard to argue with that principle indeed. Except that Santa is dressed for snow at Christmas! Maybe he has a t-shirt on under his coat...

Being Melbourne Cup Day in Australia, a suitably celebratory legal lid was required.

Melbourne Cup Day! Is that another excuse to get drunk and wear good hats? If so, COUNT ME IN!!!!!! Nice Dobbs Tutt. Break out the good Shiraz. No plonk wearing a lid like that. For myself, I am about to embark on a five course truffle dinner (first truffles of the year). We will be sampling 16 wines, four Barolos, four Amarones, four miscellaneous whites, and four Super Tuscans. It is a pairing dinner for a food and wine event I am running on November 15. There will be four of us tonight so I think we have adequate quantity. In your honor, I shall refer to the dinner tonight as a celebazione della Copa di Melbourne! Best, Sam

Ye Gods Brother Sam, you've got some style. Remind me to remind you to invite me to dinner if ever I find myself in the Land of the Free!

As for a bold peppery Aussie Shiraz - I have a few good ones in the nursery awaiting the return of more moderate climes. In the meantime I'm exploring as many whites as I can.

And yes, Melbourne Cup is definitely an occasion for eating, drinking, hats and collegiality of all sorts.

But it doesn't sound like anywhere near as much fun as you're having tonight. Bon appetite!

Good morning, all! I just joined the lounge and currently practice in San Antonio, Texas. Have done so for the the last eight years and I've finally opened my own office. My partner and I found a spot in one of the first office building opened in our town--1911! Remember, texas was a frontier State (and still is!) until the late 1960's. As a life-long hat collector, I'm happy to report the new office is directly across the street from Paris Hatters and several antique stores. The first thing I did after signing the lease was go buy a Stetson Open Road--being a Texan, this first one will retain the stockman form and is brand spankin' new! The next will be vintage and hold a fedora shape.

Anyhoo, this is my first post to say hello...Doug Campbell

Welcome aboard Doug! We are indeed honoured that your first Fedora Lounge post should be posted here in the Observation Bar Association! We're always glad to welcome new members, especially if they are life-long hat collectors.
As the Portia of our Bar (to borrow from Rumpole), the lovely C-dot says - please post some hat pics when you get the chance. We do enjoy seeing lawyers in lids.

The conversation here is widespread - from vintage everything, to law, famous cases and lawyers who inspire us, to the best of wine and food. So pull up a comfy lounge chair, let me order you an Aussie Red (though I'm told the Oregon Pinot is worth its weight in gold) or anything else you fancy and join the conversation.

As for Open Roads, I confess to picking up an unused 1961 Shudde Brothers OR recently from a fellow Lounger. Its cattlemen's crease has now been replaced by a fedora one - tear drop and front pinches. I admit that the wide brim was a bit of shock on this Aussie city-boy noggin more used to moderate brims. But your fellow Texan Mr Paladin is keen to point out that it suits me fine and that it would be a criminal act in the Lone Star State for such an outstanding Texas lid to be left in the corner. It really is a superbly crafted hat. Old Mr Shudde knew his stuff!

Thoroughbred Hat matched with green Burberry tie and green shirt. I added a small feather to the bow to hide a small stubborn discolouration on the band.

Sorry I'm late

Sorry that I'm late to the thread. Personal issues and an ill mother kept me away for quite some time. But, I'm thrilled to come back and find that we now have a little Bar in the bar, so to speak.

As the name says, I'm currently a Magistrate in the middle of Ohio. Spent 12 years as a prosecuting attorney. First as a civil/juvenile court type, and then I became a child abuse and violent crime specialist. Just before I burned out, I took a spot as lead counsel for the local narcotics task foce, where I got to live out all of my fantasies of being one of "The Untouchables." Double breasted suit, Stetson fedora, and Smith and Wesson .357 in a shoulder holster underneath. Then in 2006, I got offered the magistrate position in Juvenile/Probate court. Better hours, no more late night search warrants, and a chance to actually be a father to my sons instead of seeing them as I changed clothes or ate dinner. So, here I am.

I work primarily in juvenile court, do some probate work, and help out with general division work when they need another body in a robe. The robe does inhibit my dress, to a degree. But, no shorts under the robe for me! I still dress appropriately every day, as I believe I should look as good under the robe as I do wearing it. As for accoutrements, I wear my nice Tissot Ballade watch, hide my cell phone in a pocket instead of wearing it on my belt, and still wear my Stetson Fedoras. So to the Smith in the shoulder holster, I'll never tell.
