What part of LA do you live in? I'm still not 100% familiar with all of the areas and we're STILL looking for an apartment. We need a 2BR or something comparable to the size of a 2BR. Everything is so expensive that it's nearly impossible to afford. We're trying to stay clear of anything "east" but naturally realize that the farther west you go, the more $$ it is. So we need something in a nice area that's do-able. My GF is working at WB and I'm still looking for a job. The whole thing is becoming really frustrating.

West Toluca Lake, er, North Hollywood.

I have heard some older apartments around here still have fireplaces?
But "NoHo" is undergoing Manhattanization with Cabrini-Green to be towering multi story developments.
It is becoming an "arts district" in which only trust fund artists can afford to live in.
Traffic exponentially growing - oh I forgot, our city fathers ballyhoo us
that we will all take the metro (as if we all live and work near stations and around schedules).
The valley has hot summers - west side residents pay for climate.
I admit to liking Burbank; Eagle Rock has character. Pasadena?
Look for an older rent controlled bldg? Craigslist?
Driving around to spot for rent signs still seems to work.
In Santa Monica one used to be able to bribe, er, I mean, pay an exhorbitant "key fee"
to a real estate agent in return for a rent controlled apartment near the beach. Does that still happen?
It IS very frustrating - I count my blesings for being led to my home and pray it will be mine for many years.
Good luck, Midnight.

Great demand

I haven't been apartment hunting in a long time so I doubt i could give much advice. Covina is East of Pasadena about 10 12 miles in the San Gabriel Valley. One thing is if there is public transportation near the Studios like the bus or Metrolink trains it may allow you to look in wider areas. Riding the bus of train is less tiring than the drivers commute usually and with a lap top allow for work time or personal life stuff to be accomplished on the ride.

The demand for rental space is growing so the price pressure is always up these days.

Good luck and check the Recycler paper i think they list rentals.

westside rentals is really the place to find apartments... although I suggest mid wilshire, around wilshire & western. it's cheap-ish, it's next to the metro aaaand you can get real deco era apartments!

I'm in Pasadena and we have been here for 3 weeks now. Although it's not home yet, we are liking it.

BTW, the weather sucks here though.

FG.

That's the thing about southern California, FG; we have only two seasons here: summer and mid February.

Right now I live in Westwood, which I don't recommend unless you're going to UCLA! It's extremely expensive for what you get (I share an apartment with 3 other girls for $2600, not including parking expense and utilities), the neighborhood is noisy (we're across the street from a frat) and the streets are in poor condition.

I really like the rest of West LA though. I'm not sure on the pricing, but it's much more reasonable than Westwood. Certain parts of Inglewood, where my boyfriend lives, can be good too. That neighborhood has a bad reputation, but certain sections of it are better than others, and it's relatively inexpensive. It isn't in East LA (it's in the southbay) but still has that feel to it, so if you're not used to living in a primarily latino and black community, it might be different. But I hang out there all the time and no one gives me a second glance!

I have to laugh at this...you that song Frank sang, "The Lady is Tramp"?
I hate California (but I love Seattle-go figure) but I'm going to QM anyway.

She gets too hungry, for dinner at eight
She loves the theater, but doesnt come late
Shed never bother, with people shed hate
Thats why the lady is a tramp

Doesnt like crap games, with barons and earls
Wont go to harlem, in ermine and pearls
Wont dish the dirt, with the rest of those girls
Thats why the lady is a tramp

She loves the free, fresh wind in her hair
Life without care
Shes broke, but its ok
She hates california, its cold and its damp
Thats why the lady is a tramp

Doesnt like dice games, with sharpies and frauds
Wont go to harlem, in lincolns or fords
Wont dish the dirt, with the rest of those broads
Thats why the lady is a tramp

Since your girlfriend works at WB and I am guessing you mean the studio in Burbank, I'd try to find somewhere as close to work as possible. If not Burbank, somewhere nearby. You don't want to deal with freeway traffic and two of the busiest freeways takes you to Burbank.

W live in the Hollydale neighborhood of South Gate on the east side of the 710 and all I know is the typical half million dollar inflated house but no idea what anything rents for.

Hubby works in Burbank, too, so we're currently looking to move closer to. I suggest the Valley - Studio City, Valley Village, Noho. Burbank will be pricier than these, but those places are close.
