Theater picture

The original picture shown on this thread was on screen in theaters to politely remind folks to remove their hats so as to not block the view of patrons behind.

Now..they only flash "Turn off your CELL PHONE".

You know, when I started this thread, I never expected to see so many gargantuan boaters (or straws, etc). Are there gigantic fedoras out there too? Homburgs?

Millions of years ago hats were actually that big. Like the dinosaurs, they have evolved into the small hats we see in the wild today.

That's right.

It's surmised that archaic man would often shelter his entire nuclear family under his hat in times of crisis. But over the ages man learned better ways to confront the elements (as well as the pain of economic hardship). Thus these massive hats (once a living symbol of power and security) were no longer an evolutionary advantage.

Borrowed from the "Hat Suggestion" thread to avoid off-topicness...

Let your groomsmen wear "normal" hats. You're the man of the hour, so go big or go home. :p

Good grief, first giant boaters, now giant top hats? What's next, giant derbies, big enough to turn into restaurants?

I posted it somewhere, but it wasn't here. [huh]

I've previously posted this as well, but it fits the theme of this thread.

Straw Hat Day, 1926

This is definitely OT, but this picture gives a perfect view of the definitive flapper accouterment, the "turned down hose". The flapper would wear these shiney silk stockings without garters, and instead they would roll the top of the stocking down till it made that nice little roll, then twist the edge into a knot and turn it under. That made the stockings stay up pretty much all day. They would occasionally give them a yank and a twist to get them back up. A very flapper gesture.
My mother's family had a housekeeper in 1922 who remaind a close family friend all her life. I remember Auntie Gail still wearing her stockings in just this way all the way into the early 1960's.

Portis Sailors 1932

Yes, 'Sailor Straws' was what my father (b. 1914) and his father called them, and they were owners of them back when they were still in style. Might have been a Detroit thing but I carry on the tradition of calling them that rather than skimmers or boaters.

While we're on the subject of boaters, is it just me, or do the proportions of the Italian-made boaters available today seem slightly different from the old-time pre-war style? The older boaters one sees seem to have a slightly lower crown and a slightly wider brim that the ones I see now. Does anyone know of a good source for a straw boater with older dimensions? Perhaps a British maker? Thanks. Dan
