I think the general gist of the subject is that it all depends where you live. The weather really dictates what I wear more than the season. That season stuff is for areas that have very discernable differences between spring, summer, winter and fall. Where you have a Mediterranean climate it just depends on the day more than the season. :fedora:
I wear them all but not straw in rain, on purpose anyway. A light Stratoliner or Playboy (old enough not to have liners) are still just as good in summer as in fall. There is even a ventilated bowler in the collection that can be worn on warmer days without much discomfort if the occasion to wear it arises.
Boaters and Skimmers stay out of the rain but they are hard enough and warm enough for fall weather here. Just go by the weather in your area.

It's popular with a a certain age set and was seen regularly into the late 1990's.
Actually, in Senior communities, it can still be seen today! You have to have penache to pull it off!

"The Full Cleveland" - and I was there "in tune" with the times of the '70s AND with panache, but didn't realize it!!

Tan poly Leisure suit, celery green poly shirt, naugahyde white shoes & naugahyde belt, cuffs rolled back. The only natural thing was the hand rolled cigar I was smoking

And ya know...I think I could do it again, but naturally this time.

ive seen where the aussies wear thier akubra cattleman fedora in the humid summer heat .
what is the most humid and hottest you wear your fur felts in?
ive been in a coconut straw fedora since it turned 85 here in east central indiana yet i feel an urgeing to tuff it out for a fur felt,
am i mad as a hatter or just fashionalbly yurning

Anything above 25'c and I'd be wearing my Panama or boater or a soft cap. Felt hats are for colder weather.

I wear my fur felts year round as well, and we often experience summer temps over 100°F. I might try a straw hat one of these days if I can find one I like for a price I can live with (I just can't see spending fur felt money for a straw hat), but until then I'd rather be a little sweaty than sunburned.

I wore a felt hat in summer in southern China one time...well, one trip. Wore my Resistol OR clone walking through Antietam in June. I didn't see a thermometer, but both places were hot. At a certain point, hot is just going to be hot.

I do have some good straws now though, so I'm less inclined to repeat wearing a felt hat, but like I said, it was still hot in Phoenix when I wore a straw.

I wear my Stetson year-round. In the Mississippi heat, you are going to sweat no matter what, so you might as well have on a decent lid—especially if it starts raining.

Felt all year, and it gets over 120 here in the summer. I stick to silverbelly in summer, as a black hat feels like a hot plate on your head at those temps. My only straw fedora makes me sweat just as much as felt anyway, and Sunbody straws are only bearable if you continuously wet them, making a heavy swamp cooler on your head. I'd rather be sweaty and wear something that looks good,

I wear felt hats year round and it gets hot here in South Texas. I work outside on ranches mostly and prefer the durability of a felt. I have some nice straw hats (Panama, Milan) but I consider them to be more dress hats. I also like the UV protection of a felt hat. A dermatologist told me once that straw hats don't do much in the way of UV protection and that I should wear a felt hat. I do have some Sunbody fine weave Guatemalan straw hats that are very tough and provide pretty good UV protection but I find that they get just as hot as a felt. Like Frank mentioned though, you can just dunk them in water to cool off.

A few years ago I was on a large ranch in South Texas when they were working their cattle. They had already rounded up all the cattle they could get by helicopter and the cowboys were going after the wilder cows on horseback with ropes. These guys were real working cowboys and did this for a living. It was probably around a 100 degrees and I noticed every one of them was wearing a felt hat. I remember thinking that was a pretty good endorsement for wearing a felt hat in hot weather.
