Thank you! I'm a little disappointed. I've been thinking about how cool that hat band was for 60 years, and it turns out it wasn't real. (And like the article says, I would have been watching it on a 12-inch (round) black-and-white TV). Maybe I need to commission someone to make me one so it will be real. Unfortunately, since I retired and moved to Belize a few years ago, I don't have a lot of opportunities to wear felt fedoras. Too hot, and too informal.

I picked up this JBS airplane pin. I’m assuming the original Stratoliner pins were the TWA ones. Is this from more modern release?

YES...it is from the Modern models.....the originals were TWA and had hinged pins.

EDIT: Somebody also made (did NOT come on the Stetson's) and actual TWA Stratoliner pin (rather than the DC3). These have also been reproduced (I cannot remember who) in both gold and silver. I have a few of the repo pins as well as the original....(in addition to the Stetson DC3's).
Here is a pick of one of the original ones....

Somewhere I have a small archive from a person who went on one of the first flights of the plane. There are tickets, a brocure, and a special commemorative coin they received. I need to take pictures.....

Does not hurt to keep a spare...just lost one off a hat the other day (wife did found on the floor, AND figured out where it came from....she is a keeper too!)
It is one of the few hat pins I actually like and keep on the hats....(on my premier models I have used the actual Stratoliner pins, rather than the DC3's).

I didn’t have one for any of my Strats and really havnt come across too many for sale... so I just grabbed it.

Hey all,

I’m new to the hat world and have jumped in feet first by purchasing 3 hats all in one go (Stetson sovereign 20 open road, Resistol explorer, and a Greely).

My question is, as tradition hat etiquette is to remove your hat indoors, I’m wondering what is the proper way of protecting your hat while out. What’s the best way to keep it while at work, church, etc. home is easy, use the box, but what do I do in those other places where I’ll be staying an extended period of time and need to put my hat somewhere and not just hold it.

First, welcome to party…sounds like you already fit in. I also commend you on your choices of hats and your desire to care for your hats.

This site isn’t very easy to use but if you use Google to search the fedora lounge you’ll do better. There are several existing threads on hat etiquette and hat storage, and I’ve included a couple links below.

I often leave my hat in my car when going to church or a restaurant etc. that does not have a safe place to store hats. I also don’t like leaving an expensive hat unattended. At work I have a coat rack with hat hooks. If I’m away from my car, office, or home and there isn’t a safe place to store my hat then it stays on my head. If it’s totally inappropriate to wear a hat, like in church (for men that is), then I’ll hold it or place it on my lap. My church doesn’t provide good storage options so it stays in the car. Realize that there are many times when your hat might be on your head just a couple minutes a day: from you home to your car, from your car to your office/destination, and then the same in reverse. Of course, if you spend more time outdoors you’ll get more use from them.

Sounds like you have a spun silk plush hat rather than a felt. The silk plush is indeed delicate (even when new) and many brushes will harm them. Silk deteriorates greatly over time, and antique silk can be VERY delicate.

The hats often were sold with a sort of soft velvet pillow for gently wiping the hats. This is less aggressive than even the softest brush. The best thing you can use is a soft cotton (diaper soft) and gently wipe the hat in the direction of the plush.....IF you absolutely have too.

As for silk, the Chinese have a saying the the effect of Their clothes (silk) will last a hundred years, while their books (handmade paper) will last one thousand.

As Mark mentioned above, you need a velvet pillow to brush a silk Top-Hat. I'm sure Lock & Co can supply you with one of those.

Morty aka! That was helpful. Here’s some images and some spots where the fibers came up after brushing. The hat already had some blemishes from use and age. I’ll look into getting a soft cotton or velvet to brush the hat in future.

What is the exact hat Matthew Rhys wears as Perry Mason? I have a friend who is ripe for fedora addiction but insists he will only wear the exact hat. Actually he might even mean the actual individual hat being used for filming but I am hoping the exact manufacturer and model might win him over

Unless someone involved in the filming/costuming speaks up, or if the inside of the hat is shown and there is some branding visible, I don’t see how this question can be answered. The hat doesn’t look very distinctive, and it could be a custom. To top it off, the same hat will look different on different people.
