For my tastes, the taper on a crown doesn't bother me. Because I don't like the stove pipe straight look.

A 4 1/2 inch crown height is perfect for me.

But several hats of mine have almost zero headroom in the rear. Steaming in a "bubble" helps, but sometimes not enough.

thanks, guys. yeah now that I've bought a handful of hats, I'm seeing the subtle or not so subtle differences. I mean brim size, flat vs. snap, etc. are pretty straight forward. But I'm starting to see the taper or the squareness more in the crown, besides just the height. I guess I need more experience with understanding which creases work better with certain crown sizes/shapes, and not trying to force certain looks where they won't accommodate my head shape. Also, I guess not having any hair doesn't help either as the sizing fits right up against the skin vs. hair that would have a little more give. Wondering if maybe going up a size and using foam in the sweatband could compensate a little bit?

This is a great thread!

Alright, two questions.

1. Does anyone know where I could get a high quality black leather motorcycle cap in a military style, y'know, the UK Rocker kinda deal? I know there's tons of 'em on eBay/Etsy/etc. but I really want to only pay money for quality. Otherwise I wouldn't be on TFL to begin with.

2. Facebook's been spamming me with Traclet website ever since I began looking into head-wear so... Are they any good? I know Sterkowski is great and I plan on ordering a coupla hats from them but they don't have the exact style I'm after so...

Thanks a bunch!

Does the 7 1/8 and 7 1/8 long oval have the same dimensions? My understanding is that the long oval is just slightly longer than the regular, but the sides have to be more narrower then if they have the same dimensions. Or is the 7 1/8 long oval slightly larger than a 7 1/8, but less than a 7 1/4 and not as wide?? After all this time I have found great results with the long oval and I thought I was a 7 1/4. Also, to make things more complicated, what about the extra long oval??

I just gave my friend a vintage hat that turned out to be too large for him. So I reduced the leather sweat to 57cm and reblocked it on a long oval block 7 1/8 which has the same circumference as the 7 1/8 oval (57cm). It still did not fit him as the gap at the temple was still very noticeable while the fit front to back was pretty good. I took a pattern of his head and it turns out he is an extreme long oval 7 1/8. First one of those I have ever run across. I was astonished that the reblock to a long oval 7 1/8" was still such a poor fit.....and that it was so noticeable at the temples. I gave him some fat felt shims for the temples and told him he was on his own as there was no more I was willing to do.

Has anyone ever seen this type of wind trolly / cord? Not sure if this was something custom the owner did or something that used to be done back in the day. Also any ideas on the manufacturer and age of this bowler?

Oh cool! I’m glad you got that... I was keeping an eye on it as well.
For what you got it for you are a winner no matter what on that one! Congratulations!
I saw it had a lot of followers, so was surprised no one else bid. I don't even have to pay s/h as it isn't located that far. Really strange size tags though, one looks like a 60's and the other one looks like a late 50's... Shame on me though, this is probably the wrong thread :eek::eek:

Not at all... Seems correct place to ask to me. I’m definitely interested in knowing the answer to that question as far as age. Looks like a 20s hat but has those more modern looking size tags. How long was that 1900 Paris logo used. The sweat and ribbon look the part.

Stetson won some prizes in the late 1800s and up to 1900 at the international expositions in Paris. The company proudly informed hat buyers of these prestigious awards in the liners of their hats between the 1870s and up until sometime in the 1920s.<<< this is what Warner says in his 'dating stetson crests etc.

Hopefully there is/are inventory tag(s)... that would clear it up.

Don't know where to post this but TODAY is the premier of the new movie..."The Cowboy Hat Movie"/ It is opening at the Montana Film Festival and tickets can be purchased today online. There is a website for the movie with links to purchase and a movie trailer. Looks like great fun.
What a fun and informative movie. Nothing earth shatteringly new but a great overview of the cowboy hat history. Only cost $5 and well worth the 75 minutes run time.

How to know if a Stetson from 40s or 50s?
I found two of my stetsons both have same style size tag, but difference inside.
Or any details shows it's from 40s?
I believe I can learn here.
