so under the front lead and the button on top of the trailing lead?

I've found this helps hold the trailing lead from flopping towards the front of the hat when hanging on a hook. We all know how that ribbon will hold a "memory" for that annoying position until you smooth it out with water.

I'm no expert, but to me that the 3 slashes near the feather appear to be burn marks, so my only assumption is that the words are also 'burned' into the hat, especially since the only picture is from an odd angle.

Rand Custom Hatters out of Billings Montana offers what they call "paint by fire". They have an artist on staff that will burn your image into the hat. He uses a fine tipped wood burning type pencil. His work is beautiful , very detailed. The last one I saw he burnt his representation of a beaded leather band into the hat. It had a real 3 dimensional quality to it, cost $300 for the art work.

You could be right, but the lettering on the brim doesn't appear to have the same "scorched" discoloration on the edges as the three marks on the crown, nor does it appear to be indented into the felt. My guess is it was written on the felt using a fine point Sharpie pen or some other kind of "permanent" marker.

Yes, on closer inspection it looks to be much courser than the paint by fire work. I am wondering about that little blob that looks like pigeon shit!.....could that become a thing?

Assuming you're referring to the gold-ish lump next to the writing on the brim, it's a skull pin. But since you mentioned ****, is anyone else getting a whiff of Nick Fouquet from this hat?

How would something written with a permenant pen react to various weather conditions, like rain? Humidity? Would it blur out..?

Dear TFL members,

A question about flanging...

If the front and back of a flange is lets say 3cm (1.2inches), and the sides are 1.5cm(0.6inches), after flanging, will the hat 'snap' and stay nicely? Attaching a picture of a result I'm looking for.

What kind of felt it is made of and which decade it was made. New/old.

I like and just bought it for 40$.

I have owned a few Beaver Brand hats. It is a shame that such an old hat making company bit the dust. The hats are good, mine have all been rabbit fur, decent quality if a bit coarse in the felt. I think it fits as a good everyday, working mans hat. $40 is a fair price and about what I paid for mine...give or take $10.
