My 150th anniversary Stetsonians came with a brim binding that matched the felt colour yet both hats, (Mink & Cariboo) had cheap generic black ribbon/bow work. It was horrid so sent it out to a hatter to be upgraded.

Yeah, but they showed in the catalog like that. I say he has a collector's item. 50 years from now they'll be arguing here on the FL about whether or not it's original.

Then it will sell for 20 bars of gold pressed latinum.

Hello TFD fans,

A question... How thick a rabbit capeline usually is? I don't need precise numbers, just more or less.

Cheers!

Question/Request. I'm looking for either a sewing pattern for a pleated hat liner for a bowler OR an old/used/worn out donor pleated liner I could "deconstruct" to make a pattern. Please PM with info. Thanks all.

I’m new here and I’m unfamiliar on how this site works.

I’ve been wanting a Panama hat for a while and found one on eBay for less than 20$, it’s a “genuine Panama Hat” from the 90s and it’s got an ugly ribbon and weird bulge on the back.

I plan to replace the ribbon and steam it if I do buy it, but I don’t know what the process of steaming a hat like that. Would it be the same as a fur felt? Or would I have to do something else?

A 120 gr Tonak is 1.5mm, a 140gr is about 2mm both unpounced. While my Winchester rabbit from Northwest Hats is 2+mm fully pounced. A matched block and flange should have about a 5mm differential between the ID of the flange opening and the circumference of the block.

Straw hats are typically blocked with a block and a tipper to 'imprint' the crease into the straw.

I’ve tried hand creasing Panama hats like I do with felt: it didn’t turn out well.

Attaching picture for reference.

Here's a new one on me. Bought a big brimmed Panama, a Don Belisario, for summer use. I've had it about three months. Like it a lot. Used it last week...took the grandbaby strawberry picking. I also have one of those plastic hat boxes so I don't crush the hat when traveling hither and yon in the car.

When we got done I put the hat in the box. It was wet with sweat when it went in the box. Forgot about it and took it out today. The hat is got a pretty good case of mold growing on it?

I put it out in the sun to dry after I found it. After a while it seemed dry and a stiff brush removed most of the mold.

Any idea what else I should do to save it?

We swim in a sea of mold. Mold requires two things to grow, a water source and a food source. The bad news is that the mold finds most things a food source. But putting the hat out in the sun was probably the best thing to do with it. Keep it dry and that good brushing should rid your hat of any of the mold residue. Keep it dry and the hat should be fine. If there is a lingering odour a light spritz with a 50/50 vinegar and water solution and more air drying should fix the odour.

The metal rings you can buy from TandyLeather.com. The leather strips you can find on Ebay, there is a good supplier in your area. Have fun create your own hat bands....much cheaper too!

On a thin ribbon hat with a wind trolley.... do you prefer the trolley cord to loop over the trailing ends of the thin ribbon OR... for the cord to be tucked under the trailing ends of the ribbon. I realize probably a personal opinion kind of thing. But I don’t see too too many TAR with the wind trolley so figured I would ask.

Over and under like God (and John B. Stetson) intended. :D
