Great hat!

There is a Stratoliner thread with more info on the Stetson model, but it has been a long while since I have read through it. Here it is:

https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/the-stratoliner-society-vintage.8329/

The hat looks wonderful! It is for sure pre-60s as Vic says, just based on exactly what he mentions - the size tag is a 50s tag at the latest.

It also has more than a few conflicting indicators that make it tough to pinpoint. The liner looks like an earlier 40s era liner with no plastic on the cover and stars in the Stetson crest. The sweatband is brown and finely stamped but shows the maple leaf in the crest - usually a sign of a 50s era hat.

A lot of these characteristics got mixed together in production, and the stars-to-maple-leaf-crest-transition is a matter or serious debate and really hard to pin down. A semi-consensus (at best) puts the transition date at 1952 or so.

Here are two more threads you might enjoy on the topic, dating Stetsons by size tag and by liner:

Have fun!

Not sure if this is the correct thread to post this question but: Will you folks date this hat for me? It is in excellent condition so I think it is not very old? Purple lining. Royal Stetson. Stratoliner. 2 1/2" brim. As shown the crown is about 4" high. It is a small size and I do not know the code on the size tag; perhaps a 6 3/4? Is the correct color name Gray? Thank you for the help.

Thank you. Understood on the small size. I think I priced it OK allowing for the few that would be able wear it. Perhaps a girl friend, wife or a young man? Thanks again, this is a nice, friendly forum. keith

I hear good things about Hatters Supply House so I’d give them a look. You should be able to order your actual size if you are reblocking without removing the sweatband. Of course, you won’t get quite as good results as the block will be slightly loose, but most of us are pleased with how it comes out. The good part about buying new from a hat supply store is you can ask the employees these questions and get expert advice. You also get the option of getting a matching flange and band block.

I agree. I have purchased sweatbands and ribbon from there, and I can vouch favorably for those purchases. Reasonable prices, and good quality, but I don't know anything about their blocks. But if you need ribbon and SB's they are a very good choice. I guess I should have directed this to Randy. @Rmccamey

Any tips / tricks to use Tapatalk? I keep trying to use it, but the website seems quicker for me. Web loads images faster than the app does when using my phone. Chronology is easier on the website too. Many here swear by Tapatalk but I just dont see it....

OK, another "dating" question. I ran across this Stetson SB. Looks like maybe a 70's model. I want to say it is an OR but the crown seems a bit too tall, so maybe it is a Western model. The odd thing is that it has the logo on the liner and the JBS Royal Stetson on the sweat but nothing else. The sweat is completely blank otherwise; no name, numbers, store of purchase...completely blank. Any idea on what this might be?

That liner and sweat look older than the 1970s to me. I associate that liner with the green with hats from the late ‘50s to the early ‘60s. Hopefully someone with real knowledge will give us both an answer.

I can say with absolute certainty that I like it!

What are the dimensions?

It really comes down to personal preference. I was reluctant when I started using Tapatalk, but came to prefer it over the web version. I like not having to click from page to page. Everything is seamless scrolling, which is to my preference. I also find uploading pictures to be easier as well. It's not perfect by any means, but I like it.
