...And if those guys only knew the true jailhouse meaning of the low hanging pants.....they may just pull them up!!
M
That's one of several rumors about why people (almost always male) wear their pants that way, and almost every "expert" on the matter (including two friends who have been incarcerated and would have first-hand knowledge) have all said it's just that--a rumor with no basis in fact.

The real reason is that prisons aren't always well stocked with every size of uniform the prisoners wear, so new inmates are often forced to wear clothes that are too large until proper sizes can be obtained for them. And belts are no longer allowed in prisons because too many inmates have used them to hang themselves over the years. So, oversized pants + no belt = sagging. That's not as "colorful" as the rumors, but it's truer. As for why people wear their pants that way in the "civilian" world, I have no idea.

Moon,
In many respects you are quite right........but I also feel it is a self respect issue......
I am not sure why many want to always display their stuff........are we really just like wild animals?
I thought we were to strive to be better.............
M
But then as you say......it must just be me.

different strokes my man ... and you don't need to approve

and I'm quite sure those in question don't care if anyone does or not

This actually sounds the most plausible ......it could also be that was the beginning and morphed into the latter meaning......I have several police and guard freinds that say the latter, which again, could have sprung from the loose issue reasons mentioned.
As for wearing pants that way on the outside perhaps indicates you are "tough" and have served time. Just like both striped and orange jumpsuits have found their way to the civilian market.....probably for much that reason.

I'll never for the life of me understand why some care so deeply about some of the harmless things that others do such as the way they dress

my mother always said something to me that I feel strongly about to this day

"make sure your own back yard is clean before you go knocking on your neighbors doors"

dress as you wish and those folks will do the same ...

as long as someone is not disrespecting me or my family I don't care if they are wearing a rubber bathing suit and flippers at dinner ... and if they were I might send a beer over to their table

And please post pics.

Sent directly from my mind to yours.

NEVER said I did need to approve.......a discussion was just started about how WE feel and OUR dress preferences. Further observations on others in no way means we were confronting people about THEIR choices.........many here on the lounge feel simular and have an affinity for the perceived mutual respect people had in the past. In fact many of the "others" we are discussing think OUR dress and especially our hats are goofy........does not mean much to us either .....,,..we have a thread dedicated to that in fact.....so......
Your approval of OUR discussion is not needed either. But we can agree you are welcome to your opinion.
I Do in fact wish you the best, my hatted friend!

I don't care how anybody dresses - even my own family. But I don't have to worry about them because we all share the same values.

But if a woman wants to wear things that leave very little to the imagination, and I like what I see, I will look. If I don't like what I see I won't look. Men who wear little, or dress like what I would consider slobs? I couldn't care less. None of them impact me in the least. To each their own.

Actually, I'm sure they do care if other people approve of the way they dress . If most people did approve they wouldn't dress that way . Not unlike what we did when we were young, different style but same idea . They will eventually need to go to work and will sell there soul so to speak and start dressing in a way that is approved of .

are you under the impression that we are talking about children ?

do you know anyone who works in the entertainment industry ? ... musicians? ... entertainers?.... artists ?

I live in the entertainment industry ... and your heads would probably explode if you are bothered by a guy in sweatpants at a restaurant

and trust me ... none of them give a rats ass what any of you think let alone being "approved of"

Well I'm not in the entertainment business, don't suppose I know anyone who actually is. I do know some musicians but it's more of a hobby than anything. Just about everyone I have noticed with there pants falling down are pretty young . Now about that approval part, how well entertainers do depends on there audience, how popular they are. Or put another way, how much people approve of there performance. An engineer is probably more independent than an entertainer although they are just as strange sometimes. Back to the original discussion, I couldn't care less how people dress other than I do find it entertaining at times. I have gone to Walmart just to people watch. There is a Starbucks real close to a Walmart so a cup and a sit and watch is a natural.

WOW Moon, you really need to read MY post above again. I think YOU have missed the point of the discussion. Many of us "don't give a rats ass" as you say about the entertainment industry, nor know anyone in it, nor care. Now I happen to know some in the industry (mostly Buskers and theater troops), but I still "don't give a rats ass" for the most part ,as you say what they think, on many things (though I get along with most all of them).

Now many here DO care what the people in the Schools, Churches, Banks, Business and industries in our local communities think. In other words the the everyday people we come in contact with, the people we truly interact with, upon whom our livelihood may rest, we DO care how we interact with them. If we tell THEM we could care less....well it may be a good idea to move, or get another Job.

We each cater to the group we work with and feel the most comfortable with, else we do not succeed and are miserable. By catering to everyone, we cater to NO ONE. Even in the music industry, if they cared about no one, they would fail. We all have our audience. The audience we support and supports us. Again, we CANNOT cater to everyone.

Now if a person comes to me for a job or wants anything from me, they very well better care what I think. I DO NOT believe ANYONE (including myself) deserves special privileges, including a Job just because they exist, they really need to earn them. I am really tired of those who just demand......that "entitlement" mentality.

As for the discussion, many here are just describing THEIR audience and could care less about the concert in the next town.

I am not sure why you are so offended by the discussion. But I do like to hear some of your stories and very much enjoy your hats. I (for one) do not remember EVER telling anyone, including you how to dress. I and many have preferences, and we like to talk about those. No different really than analyzing the dress of people in the vintage photographs. We are just discussing the here and now, and expressing OUR thoughts. Sometimes we even connect the two.......the present and the past.

I really do not like the discussion of who currently cares or not what we think, because in the end, we each of us have an opinion, are entitled to it, and may share it if we wish. But it is best not to be offensive, and agree to disagree.

And if you wish to walk into Sunday School in your underwear, so be it, but do not be surprised in many disapprove........

Best

M

The sugarloaf thread was tacked onto the "western, anyone?" hat tread, not this one. The quick link is wrong. Also there is no other thread dedicated to Sugarloaf hats. I cant see why it wasn't left alone and had to be added to another thread.
Johnny

No clue as I have never been on this thread before this morning. I simply answered this thread that was posted in the hat forum last night. "

I’m able to see both sides. So often people act with more comportment and dignity when they are dressed nicer. I saw it chaperoning dances: when the kids were allowed to wear most anything they wanted they acted quite differently than when ties and jackets were required. It also showed some pride and that they were willing to put out some effort. I also saw that the girls would put in hours to look their best while the boys took dressing and grooming slovenly to its extremes.

No I get that I’m only accountable for myself and that I shouldn’t force my own preferences into others. I agree with that. But just as I might wish that others weren’t homophobic or didn’t vote for a particular politician or didn’t espouse a political belief. I can also wish that they dressed and acted with some sense of dignity. I don’t want the power to force my beliefs on them or to enforce dress or grooming standards, but surely I too am entitled to my opinion on how others dress.

I guess that one of my biggest issues was the reference to the “problem” being the observer’s. I don’t think it is anyone’s problem, just a preference. We all have preferences on how the world should be, but hopefully we don’t inappropriately force our preferences on others. For instance, I might prefer wearing fedoras but I don’t want to force others to wear them; still, I can wish that more men wore them as I find that aesthetic appealing. I see nothing wrong in this and I don’t see it as anyone’s “problem.”

As for the men with their pants sagging almost to their knees, as long as they don’t cross the line to indecent expose I don’t care (even though I think they look stupid). When those same men dressed in that same way have their job applications immediately thrown away I hope they aren’t surprised.

Moon, I hope you are not serious. I hope that none of this crossed the line to become a personal attack. I hope I did nothing to offend. Your contributions are needed and wanted here.

When talking about preferences and philosophies we are all going to come across others with whom we disagree. There will be times when we “know” we are right and the others won’t be convinced. The answer is not to remove our voice from the discussion.

If I gave offense please accept my apology.

Brent.
