The foam stuff works well, but I've recently become a convert of these: http://jjhatcenter.com/collections/hat-accessories/products/cotton-sizing

JJ sent me some to use with the Boss Raw Edge I'm wearing in my avatar. They're functionally the same, but in my possibly OCD opinion, the cloth strips look like they "belong" inside a hat more so than the foam.

But then again I'm weird like that....

Anyway, they work real nice. I see Village Hat Shop also has some terry cloth sizers that would work well in a straw hat.

That looks good Jarod , and it looks more precise , plus like a bandana , catches sweat . I thought about rolling a bandana , but had So Much of this weather stripping NOW ! I decided to put tissue on the sticky side , and redid mine .

Thanks everyone for the answers/suggestions. Frunobulax, I do not have pictures and no longer have the hat. I think what I'm reading is I put the steam too close to the edge and maybe too much steam and too close with the steam. Well thanks for the tips, I"ll will checkout the pork pie video and the "Monster Bash" thread.

Anyone need an avatar?

I should know the answer to this by now... but for all you professional hatters out there:
Can an oversized hat be resized smaller? Is it as simple as a sweatband replacement, or would it be a more involved process? I'm talking specifically reducing from 7 1/4 to 7 1/8.
I have a beautiful D Bar J fedora that if I can't sell, I'd love to be able to wear, but the 7 1/4 is just too big.
I get felt squares from the craft dept at Walmart for 50 cents a square & cut them into sizing strips. Also, wet the sweatband & felt around it & let the hat dry quickly in a hot car, some put near a lamp with old fashion light bulb. It should draw in from 1/4 to 1/8.

I was wonder on hat that is a bit small, and using a hat jack. Why couldn't you heat /steam a hat from the outside of the crown at the base of the brim to soften it up then wear the hat until it cools. Wouldn't that stretch the hat to fit your head? Or is the hat jack the only way to stretch a hat if it is a bit small.

That will work as well, so long as it's not so small that it distorts the brim when you pull it down on your noggin.

I try to keep it on, so other drivers will know I mean business! Otherwise, when the head rest gets obtrusive, it is next to me on the passenger seat, waiting longingly to be put back on. If the wife is taking up hat space, the hat rides behind her so I can get to it upon exiting the vehicle.
