I got an eBay Borsalino that I believe is a pocket hat with the smallish coffin-like box. After some steaming and blocking and hand work its looking pretty good. But there is one odd thing. Odd for me anyway. The brim on this hat is very thin and has almost a plastic structural feel to it. All my other hats (stetson runabout, Borsalino Alexandria, Art Fawcet) have thicker felt brims. The other brims to snap down for the look I like but its a soft snap. This pocket hat brim is much thinner and feels like a really soft forfeit but it snaps and fells like a plastic brim. So what is going on... Are some brims processed so that they behave this way? I am going out to Pennman hats tomorrow to do some professional blocking and will ask him as well.

I'm in the market for a new hat and having a xxl head makes it a very trying venture. I came across "irish walking" hats which have piqued my interest. I'm wondering if they are just 'bucket' hats under another name? Hats which do not look good on my might sized dome. In particular the Hanna brand hats seem to be "bucket-y" in comparrison to the jonathan richard hats that I've seen (looks like they are made from 3 panels rather than 2). Is there a very distinct difference in the way the hats will sit on my head or is it just the way the example photos have been taken? Thanks.

So I finally talked with the people at the Hat Store in Houston, and I am planning on having them make my wide brimmed black Borsalino Trionfo into a shorter brimmed Homburg on Thursday. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on versatile ribbons and/or brim treatments I could have them put on while they are cutting and shaping the brim. I guess my question is should I stick with black on black or go with another color for the brim binding and ribbon? If so, what color? I like things that are versatile but that also pop and are classically styled. Also, does anyone have any suggestions for brim size for a homburg? My current brim is 3.75 inches spin have quite a bit to work with.

I like a bigger brim homburg. 2 3/4 maybe 2 7/8 or 3in. Love this one pictured here. I'll back this post up with more pics from a different host. Also Moon sent me a Schoble and the brim is finished with a thinner ribbon. I also dont like a homburg with too deep of a flange like this lighter grey Biltmore. With black my instinct says to go with a medium grey to lighter steel grey ribbon

Very welcome. You might want to ask abt a crown reblock to straighten out the sides. That crown appears to have some taper that might look a little awkard with the homburg style brim and centerdent.

Great suggestion Bob ! Both the Re-Block , and Brim Width . Possible Ribbon treatment , also . I like the Wide Brim , Straight Tall Crown Homburgs the Best . Most Have it , but that Biltmore needs something , Bowlerman's Looks Perfect , as does that Stetson bond had (Loved that Hat and it was my size , too) , Perfection X100 !

Thanks Michael. Those two Stetsons are my favorites. That Biltmore Imperial was a inexpensive Ebay pickup. Deeper flange. Shorter crown. Smaller brim. Liked the color and just wanted another homburg.

I've thought about that curl , the color looks great . It might be possible to get that curl more like the Stetsons , it just looks limp , not as crisp . (Like a different type of Curl , loose , or something . I've noticed it on some other Homburgs , also) The Biltmores that you have look awesome . I bet a Hatter knows .
