Dress to Impress

This is a little late for the gathering, which I see was 2009, but I think the suit with a brown hat and brown shoes would look perfect. I used to think one had to wear black hat and shoes with dark blue or black, but I've since learned that some of the best-dressed people in the '30s and '40s typically dressed in that way. Even if someone should say something, you can respond with total confidence and a superior smile.

Toilet Paper and Guild Edges

Heh heh, you asked for it. In my dark novel, „The Little Mornings", we provide the definitive answer to the toilet paper question. #Amazon (Cambridge Books).

Obviously, a 1.5" sweatband costs less than a 2-incher. All my old hats have a nice wide sweatband, and I have two with the felted finish. My prize is a Dobbs Twenty in long oval with a wide sweatband and "Guild Finish" to the edge. I always thought Penney was a cheap end produce, but I have an old Towncraft (really just about my favorite) of XXXX beaver with a beautifully finished felted edge (which I understand costs about twenty percent of a hat's production cost and is almost a lost art today). I can't quite figure out who actually made this hat. I have a feeling (Like Sears Kenmore products) that Penney bought from different manufacturers and had the Towncraft label inserted. But it's a quality hat — shows some wear, especially around the sweatband, and I'm torn between having it cleaned, blocked with a new headliner and sweatband (and replacement for the somewhat faded ribbon), or just to keep it the way it is and wear it until I'm gone. :eusa_doh:

I am easily confused. Whatever are you talking about, and WHAT did I ask for? Just trying maintain (or establish) a little continuity here...

can anyone tell me why on the Del Monico site a Steston Strat is $175
and on JJ Hat Center site the "Premier" Stratoliner is $245

what is the difference ?

and does that word "Premier" represent any superiority in quality ?

Agreed... I seem to welcome the rain just to admire their durability. And since this is the Q&A thread, can anyone shed light on why Akubra felt seems to hold up so much better? What are they doing differently?

Just guessing from what I've heard and read. Hare hat bodys instead of rabbit? Thicker and stiffer felt? A rougher less sanded finish?

I'm curious as to what these weather-related problems are, which Akubras are known to resist. What is happening to other furfelts that don't seem to be happening to Akubras?

Shrinkage and tapering of the crown. The worst modern offenders seems to be Christy's hats, which aren't particularly dense, and it was speculated that they were dry blocked. Although Hatco/Stetson has cleaned up their act as of late, there was a period of time where they used powder dye in their hats which would easily run when exposed to the elements.

Folks from StyleForum would think that most loungers look "out of place".

On StyleForum, the odd trouser/sports jacket look is very popular, while suits are only reserved for work. It's amazing how fashion changes so quickly.

Anyone agree that folks from StyleForum are a bunch of pretentious snobs? I mean if you wear the same piece shirt color everday you would be labeled as "out of place"

If you don't wear a new outfit everday, you would be labeled as "out of place."

Even a full suit is considered "out of place."

As a general rule, I find it unwise to make judgements based on second-hand statements.

But it's all relative. The folks on StyleForum are "out of place," to you, no?

I'm just upset at browsing through that forum =P. There's a lot of trolling and mischief on style forum. I prefer this forum and AAAC.

I guess I'm more into the classic fit of suits, instead of the skinny suits I've been seeing recently.

I've been "out of place" my entire life; I see no need to change now. :D

My only clothing dilemma is deciding which hat to wear!
