I agree; the Fed IVs and Campdrafts are not what I'd consider lightweight felts. I still wear mine year-round anyway, even in temperatures like what you mentioned APP Adrian, because I'd rather wash perspiration off than have more skin cancer cut off of me.

I'll still buy a FED IV as my first felt because of the sun. I wear long sleeve shirts and pants in summer, people sweat no matter what during summer, I would rather sweat then get skin cancer. I'm only 19, I probably don't have to worry about cancer, but the damage does add up over time though.

You only have to worry on sun exposure when it is high in the summer. It also depends on skin color. People with very pale skin (we call them "milk glass" because they are very very pale/albino) should take even more care. In the summer I'm not at the beach after 10:30 AM and on the afternoon never before 17:00 (5:00PM).

Adrian, some of it is genetics, some exposure. I've had several pre-cancerous divits of skin cut out of me and my wife has had five very large melinoma excisions (think golf ball to tennis ball size). If I get something like that on an ear, I'm out an ear. I prefer felts in the summer to the various straw hats. I wear light colored ones like an Open Road a lot.

Did you consider a Stetson '47? Shantung straw for under $100. Grade 8 Panama for around $150. 2 and 3/4 in brim. High crown. Thin ribbon. You may like it.
Hello Bob,

Yes I do own one, looks battered but its a nice hat indeed.

Maybe time to get another one....

But you know, why should I buy another hat? ;)

Just for the pleasure of it.

Already bought the sand one, I look to wear this when I don't want to risk my Panamas !!

Thanks a lot

Was seriously considering a Squatter w factory telescope/porkpie bash from EA. Getting the impression that it's a softer lighter felt than the Squatter offered by David Morgan. TRUE? I believe that the Squatter from EA has a crown height that is actually lower than DM's. Is that also true? TY for info.

From what I have seen here in the Lounge of DM's Squatters, TRUE to both.
I bought 2 Squatters from a fellow Lounger who lives in Australia. Both were Superfine quality with no liner, only a tip sticker.
I sold them both, 1 due to color & other due to crown being too low for my taste. Replaced it with a Bushman.

Yes, people with pale, freckled skin are more susceptible, as are people with blonde or red hair and/or blue, green, or grey eyes. And you can decrease the odds of getting skin cancer by taking the proper precautions during mid-day when the sun is directly overhead and the UV rays are more concentrated, particularly during summer months. BUT...those same UV rays still penetrate the clouds even on overcast days, so if you're in the group of people who are at a higher risk of contracting skin cancer you should take precautions whenever you're outdoors and exposed for long periods of time. And some doctors believe you're at risk if you've ever had a sunburn (which is everyone I know), so that would include almost everyone on the planet.

My father-in-law supplemented his income for a lot of years by painting houses. He was born in 1913, and through most of his life concerns about sun exposure and skin cancer weren't the common knowledge they are today, so he spent a great deal of time in the sun unprotected. He had quite a bit of skin cancer removed when he was in his 70s and early 80s, and eventually lost most of his left ear. My wife and I have experienced our first bouts with having skin cancer removed (Basal Cell Carcinoma), and will likely have to undergo that procedure again in the future; seems to be pretty common these days.

So I found a great little hat but can find no info about it. The embossed gold label on the leather band haS a crest with the words "for everymans head" on it
under that it says Morgans Special. The label under the band for duplicate ordering says "Buckley Brooks"
Does anyone know anything about it??

Thanks

Hi I'm looking at a bullrider felt cowboy hat by Bee hats in pretty good shape. The price is only $6.00. Is this a good buy? Thanks ESCAP / mike.

Without being able to see the hat, it would be hard to say one way or the other. Although at $6.00 it is not a costly adventure if you decide to purchase the hat.

Thx for verifying. I was FINALLY able to get my Camp Draft down to a nice even 4 and 1/2 in. telescope crown w very little wrinkles and creases. Now I'm working on the "dome" on the center and its raising up nicely. It really does look alot like the Squatter on the DM site so with a 3 month wait at EA I'm gonna hold off as I to was not liking the shorter Squatter crown. The lighter felt does sound nice though...

I believe your hat may be a Sunlan hat that was sold by the New York Hat Company. I was unable to find anything on a "Buckley Brooks" or "Morgans Special", but I did find the following in relation to "for everyman's head":

https://books.google.com/books?id=U...Aw#v=onepage&q="for every man's head"&f=false

I hope this helps. If I find anymore I will pass it along.

That is one sweet Pork pie, Cally. My guess would put it as a 1950s vintage, but I was wrong once before. Really terrific lid, whatever its age. Congrats!!

A childhood friend of mine is expecting his first child in July. I was wondering if there ever was a tradition of giving a hat to a fellow as a gift for such an occasion. As I have no children, nor a wife, I am unaware of any such custom but I wished to ask.

At least a few gents here on The Lounge have had custom hats made to commemorate the births of their children. I don't know if that, or what you suggest, is or was ever a tradition, but I would think such a heartfelt gift would be greatly appreciated, especially if your friend is a hat wearer.
