I am going to the opera later this week and was wondering how hat etiquette pertains in this situation. Of course it will be off when seated, but what about when walking into the theater or in the lobby?
-Thanks!
I concur. Unless you stop to talk to someone it's acceptable to wear your hat in the lobby, but it should be removed before you take your seat so as not to block the view of anyone sitting behind you. Of course, if the venue offers "hat and coat check" services you can take advantage of that before the performance begins and not have to concern yourself with what to do with your hat during the show.Only reason to take your hat off in the lobby is if you are talking to someone, it is polite to take your hat off then. Lobbies, hallways, elevators, train stations, etc are all fair game to keep your hat on. Entering the office or someones home it comes off.
