There have been a few different Boss of the Plains hats marketed by Stetson over the years. The current incarnation is a "hand distressed" very modern looking cowboy hat with an extreme brim curls and a cattleman's crease. The original was a flat top (some were rounded on top) hat which was usually left unshaped. The current Stetson Austral model is a take on the original Boss of the Plains:

I was a bit taken aback for his price on cleaning but hey what are you going to do .

Just chiming in on the pricing talk on Blocking etc.
For a real deep clean and re-block (to any shape I might add - with blocks that are actually different sizes - $55 doesn't seem too far off (unless paying for shipping is free now). We offer some of the best work in the business (respectfully - all you hat shops out there can take that how you want). Those out there that do fine work - I salute you - and you know who you are.
Yes 95 percent of our work is done here on site as well (minus new leather sweats and bound edges which is done by the fine folks at Worth and Worth which I stand by proudly), and I challenge anyone (I mean that) on cleaning and blocking. You get what you pay for. I know some folks out there have some "deals" (and I am not going to say name and you surely know who you are). If its deals you want, then I am sure one may try to talk me into believing McDonalds serves a fine burger too but it doesn't mean I'll go and buy one.
As far as all that "full retail" talk. Come in our shop - or any good hat shop like JJ's, Worth and Worth, The Hat Guys etc, and enjoy a true full service experience, a well curated selection, and a 'competitive' price point - or "full retail" if that's the reference. Check for a cheaper price and I bet you won't find it or find that we are far off (another challenge) - I double check every piece with the wonderful web so we're not too worried over here. My apologies to the Bartender too (tips hat) I am a true Gentlemen but being from Boston I couldn't hold my tongue too much : ) after all that talk.

I have one of these new Australs by Stetson, and it's truly a remarkable hat. I"m not sure what 4X Buffalo fur means, but it's nicely finished, yet feels very rugged. The crown is perfect and the sweatband feels like a very high quality leather. Liner is a cool coppery color. My only complaint is I wish they would make the brim about a half an inch shorter-- then I believe it would be identical to Mattie Ross's hat from that True Grit remake.

I'm going to bump this....Seems strange no one knows anything about "hatsonline.com"
It was one of the first hats co's I get when I'm googleing looking for lids....I hope somebody here can throw some light on these hats....That 'Club' Pork Pie looks beautiful from the pics...and says Fur Felt...but the prices are sooo reasonable as to draw suspicion...

I talked with Whiteley Hats in England....They gave me someone at the factory who told me that yes the Club Pork Pie was 100% fur felt...After a short conversation he also said that the Fur felt did not handle rain showers or getting wet ANY better than their wool pork pie...and if you got caught in a shower they were not resonsiple for the hat keeping its shape....Guess those prices come at a price...lol...

I'm discovering there is no mystery or magic here....You really do get what you pay for....And if you search for a great vintage hat, the rewards are unquestionable....There certainly can be a little luck involved but there really aren't alot of short cuts or magic new fur-felt hats for under $100's....Now that I've finally excepted this.... I've found a great late 50's Borsalino at $100 and Am thrilled....The fur felt is sooo nice...I appreciate everyone who steered me away from the "bargain-felts"...although I didn't want to hear it at the time...lol...But the advice I have found here has been very sound and I would have never found this 'Holy Grail' of a hat without your guidance....Thanks to All

I'm not sure when my Boss is from but the specs are as I mentioned, 4" flat brim with a 6 1/4 round top. It still has the tag behind the sweatband that says B.O.P. and that crown size and shape looks like the base shape of any campaign cover, which I doubt would look good with my round face.

I saw mention on this or another thread of a chart for hat/face shapes...any idea where I may find that?

There are numerous discussions of hat etiquette if you search. Personally, I think 95% doesn't apply in 2012. Many would disagree. Somebody could possibly be offended if you don't doff your hat, but nobody will if you do. For my own part, in a nice restaurant, I would remove my hat. A diner? Not so much, unless there's a hat rack present.

I have never seen a Peters Brothers Indy hat but I can't imagine any hat handling rain better than an Akubra.

My Fed IV has been in torrential rains; especially this past week as the rains wouldn't stop and flooding occurred. The PB has never been subjected to heavy downpours, only a little rain. I was just wondering if it could take that kind of abuse.

Hello HatsRme, I just wanted to say thanks and give you an update as I said I would .

The place Salmagundi that you refered me to was awesome!

I didn't get to meet the owner because he was doing a tent ,"booth" on the greenway down near the old BIGDIG .

However my wife and I met a girl who works there and her name is Maya ,there was also another young man working with her wearing a real nice straw fedora ,vest and such looking dapper!

The owner asked her to wait on me when I showed up and even told since I was coming from 50 miles away that I could get there as early as ten thirty (even though they dont open till 11 am) and she would spend time with me and my Fedoras and help me figure out what course of action to take in regards to them.

First she looked them all over ,showed me where I had one small moth bite on one of them but very small ,I did not even see it although I looked them all over very carefully myself previously to bringing them there.
Then I showed her the two that were too small and she told me that they could stretch them both since the size was not too '"far away" from the desired size .

Only my 5 x beaver felt needed a deep cleaning and the rest she was going to just steam clean and reblock.
I left there with a bill of $141:00 for the various services ,etc.etc.

I was scheduled to go and retrive the rest of them this past Saturday , but Maya called midweek to tell me that the two hats that were being stretched, the bands on both of those disintegrated .

I was kinda bummed to hear that, although I knew that one was kinda brittle and the other one oh well ,as they say " say la vie " !

The thing that I liked about Salmagundi is this .

First Maya ,called to tell me that she sent those two "problem child" hats to a guy who install's brand new inner sweatbands, stitching and all ( I can't imagine that being easy to do) for $40:00 bucks a hat.

The cool thing was that she called to ask me if I wanted it done instead of just going ahead with it .

Even though I was stuck anyway, since there is no hatter where I live and they already knew that they still called to ask my permission before telling the person to proceed.

Thats what I call service!

She then told be that it would be three weeks untill they were going to be ready and that I could still leave my other ones with them untill the other two were ready ,thus saving me a trip up to Bean Town.

All in all a great place, and I hope to meet the owner when I go back to get the Fedoras.

By the way , I bought all my hats off of E Bay and the 5 x beaver Fedora that cost me $35:00 for example ,Maya told me that hat went for around $350:00 brand new.

Again in closing, thanks for helping me out .

Hello Everyone , Fashion Frank here.
To the owner of Salmagundi the following is in reference to post #6002.

As I was talking with your staff about picking up my hats and was informed that two of them needed new sweat bands and so therefore they would not be ready for about three weeks, I told them I could not pick them up in three weeks as I play in a bagpipe band and I would be on the road with the band www.rihighlanders.org that weekend.

Maya told me no problem that they would store them till I could pick them up .

Now as far as any debate about charges for services etc.etc. ,service isn't just about what someone charges you for a service they perform, it's also about how your treated ,the level of real customer service that you receive and that also the actual services that you contract are done RIGHT !

Now some of you might not believe this but its an actual coinincidence here , because I havent been on the internet as I have been working mega overtime and its a three day weekend here in the state that I live in.

I was catching up on my forums and I did not even know that Post 6002 was here , I logged on and posted 6014 because ,as I had stated in an earlier post that I would let you all know how I made out at Salmagundi after my initial vist but I didnt 'scrool back into these posts untill this morning ( I posted post #6014 last night ,and then logged off ).

The internet is a great thing but its also faceless and so some people enjoy hiding behind a screen and trashing a company ,business or what have " just for kicks" ( not refering to you HatsRme thanks for the tip .
Just go read the post I posted last night and you will see what I really think about Salmangundi of boston .

I apologize if this is the wrong thread, but as a relatively new reader, I ask for a pardon on my ignorance. To the mods, feel free to move this to the appropriate place if you so desire.

All that said, my question is - I see a number of eBay links in the vintage forum, but many of those are the British eBay, and many of the British items are not available for postage to the United States, that is, unless I'm mistaken, in which case I'm glad to be mistaken. The most unfortunate thing is that I see a number of deals that I would spring for in a heartbeat on suits that I am enamored by.

I know there are probably a great number of Brits on this website, along with other, well, "non-Americans". Am I resigned to clicking on many of these links, and even links that I follow from there on eBay, and just left to be jealous about the awesome suits that are there? I don't know, it's just irritating to me to be, in effect, shut out by stuff that I actually happen to really, really like. Thanks in advance.

(and sorry for how poor the phrasing might seem on this post - my thought process kind of fell apart in the midst of my typing.)
