Typically I think hat ribbons are a mixture of rayon and cotton, so yours isn't the norm. For all that though, it might work. I couldn't say for sure.

Oh and btw, nice signature, but the first word should be veni, rather than vini. ;) -M

You can only put photos on this site if you have someplace to host them. I'd suggest getting a free account from someplace like Flickr.com or some other free photo hosting service. You cannot cut and paste a photo from your desktop or upload a photo directly from your computer to a message board like this one. (That's if I understood your question right)

Thanks for the correction.

Yep I heard that too. I'm trying to find a modern replacement for vintage grosgrain. It's getting harder and harder to find. I intend to start making my own hats in about 3-4 months time. ( I haven't posted my efforts as I am just starting ) I know where to purchase 100% Rayon - reems of the stuff, but my knowledge is somewhat limited as to the propertys o 100% rayon. I have heard other guys use it. ( and have searched the threads ) But I want to know if the 100% rayon conforms well to shaping and steam? Just all due to my inexperience really - But the most important aspect to me is the quality.

Many many thanks

i know some are against even a cotton, rayon mix if the rayon is the newer stuff (synthetic, not made with wood fiber) because it dose not conform well. That said there's nothing to keep you from forming your own opinion by trying to make some ribbons for a hat or 2 if nothing else it would give you valuable experience in making ribbons and bows.

Millinery grosgrain is made differently from regular craft ribbon. The edges of millinery ribbon form little loops whereas craft ribbon has straight, flat edges. The fiber content of rayon or cotton/rayon allows one to "swirl" the ribbon, a technique that shapes the ribbon to fit the hat. A flat unswirled ribbon will gap along the top.

If someone could let me know how to create an album here (I can't find the link) I would be happy to take a pic and post it so you can see what I mean.

I think you may need 15 posts total before you can directly upload a photo (?), but most of us use outside photo host accounts to enable us to simply put the pic in as part of a post.

To do that, you simply set up an account (many are free) with a good photo host. My favorite free one is Photobucket.com, but some here also use Image Shack or Flickr.

Which is better for durability and rain resistance, mink, beaver, or a mix? (with all things being equal-generally)

That's very interesting. I am only in my mid-thirties, and do not have the years behind me for collections of vintage ribbon. So, if I get you right 100% rayon will do the trick ( I've heard ABDeluxe source their ribbon in the UK. a cotton/rayon mix but I can't for the life of me source them ) I have been addicted to hats for a very-long time now though, it all started with a Panama at 14 years old, and in my mature years I am still facin ated by hats of all types.
I am making a few hats for friends in the new year. four straight crowned fedoras in black ( 2 1/2 brim 5 3/4 crown. ) I am having a friend make me some blocks based on a tall block I picked up in france, brim blocks too. I have blocked my own hats in the past, but this will be my first foray into actual forming sewing and so on. I am making an actual list of the process ( that may be wrong or right ) that I may post up for folks to find holes in.
I just want to find the best contempory alternative in quality when it comes to ribbon. If I find any good suppliers in the UK I'll post them up. It's a real pain getting into this though, materials and equipment, all now specialist. So I'm spending time in my freinds workshop to make a rounding jack, irons and so on as I have decided to make all of my equipment from scratch. But, I am learning a lot before I even get started.

Thanks a lot for your advice. ( let's see those pics )

You can post pix on your first post but you must use a hosting site; no direct uploads unless you snatch something off the interweb..

How does one read an old Stetson Hat label. If it say 3/4 does it mean 6 and 3/4 or 7 3/4

It could be either size. The smaller size is more commonly encountered but both are possible. One is a rather small hat for an adult male, the other is an extra large size. If the size is not indicated in full behind the leather sweatband, you will need to get the width and length of the oval (or the circumference) to be sure.
