Always wondered why a few were cheaper. Didn't know he did rabbit felt, either. Thanks for the info!

I only found out because I ordered a rust hat and Art told me he only had it in staple and it might be several months before he had any beaver in rust. In fact, I need to check with him and see if he ever got any, hmmmm
Also, the staple hats don't get a certificate of authenticity and they don't get the fancy box according to Art.

Head measurement and Art Fawcett

If I order a hat from Art Fawcett does the conformer he send out also record your head measurement? (I mean in inches/centimeters as well as head-shape) [huh]

I ask because every time I try and measure my head with tailors tape myself, I end up with measurements ranging from 21 7/8 inches to 22 1/4. I even went to a country western store (cowboy hats/boots/jeans, etc) and they measured my head at 23 inches! :eusa_doh: I or someone else must be doing something wrong. I don't have that much hair...

I had planned on ordering a hat by Mr. Fawcett eventually and figure his conformer would be the best at determining my true hat size. It'd be nice to know my exact head circumference for future reference. Thank you.

when Art sends you a conformer he also asks you to measure your head as a precaution against the conformer getting out of whack on it's way back to the wilds or Oregon. Once Art gets your conformer he can verify for you the actual circumference of your head.

I never seem to get the same measurement twice with a cloth tape so I know where you're coming from. A hat should feel like it's almost too big - if it leaves a red mark on your forehead after you've worn it a few minutes, it's too small. It should barely "catch" as you take it off. Pulling the tape too tight will result in a too-small sizing decision.

When you visited the Western store, did you try on any hats? The best way to determine your size is to try on several, with the help of a knowledgeable salesperson. Hat sizes might vary a bit from hatter to hatter, just as shoe sizes differ slightly depending on the manufacturer and last, but if, for example a size 7.5 Stetson cowboy hat fits just right, then a Stetson 7.5 dress fedora will fit the same.

Where can I find a black fedora with a wider band much like in the 1920s/30s? Been looking for one and don't know where. :[

Ebay is always a good place to look, and there are plenty of online retailers for new felt hats. The Fedora Store sells Beaver Brand hats that you can order with customized ribbon treatments and brim bindings.

I don't know what's available there in the Star City, but there's a western-wear shop in the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg that carries a few modern dress fedoras. I looked around there last winter when I was visiting my folks - I wasn't impressed with their offerings but if you find yourself up that way you could take a look and get fitted. I can't remember the name of it but it's near one of the mall entrances.

What kind of hat is this!?

I figured this would be the best thread to post this question in.

This is one of my first fedoras that I got in another play I was in and was allowed to keep after production.

There are no labels on it, just a logo, and always wondered what company it was. The label sort of looks like a Stetson but don't think it is. Can someone make out what company this may be? Sorry in advance for the poor photo.

AXL, did anyone ever answer your question? Is there nothing on or behind the leather sweatband to take into account?

Anything under the sweatband? My guess is maybe Biltmore.

Thanks so much for the responses!

There is nothing else on the hat. I looked under the sweat band and besides the paper tag in it that says size 7 1/8, there is no other hint of what company it would be.

Thanks for that link to Lions Hats! This might be it.

Biltmore Hats

Does anyone know what's up with the Biltmore Hat Company in Canada?. They have been out of service for over two months. Have they gone bankrupt again?

Edge Binding

I couldn't find this elsewhere here. Over the summer I am thinking of putting a new ribbon on a hat and that is explained on this forum, but how do I bind the edge please?

Millinery Petersham ribbon has been recommended to me and I have a source in London for that.
