Which brands had a "100" hat?
I know that Dobbs, Stetson, Knox, Churchill, MacLachlan, Cavanagh, Resistol, and Bailey did.
Were there any others?

A new one to me:

Personally, I don’t think that such hats are peers of the other Hundreds you own. I’d have no problem not including them in a collection, but that’s just me.

I’ve been enjoying seeing so many great hats and hearing how they compare. It would be nice to see something scholarly written about them. I think you can assign them numeric values based on hand, density, malleability, thinness, etc. We could call it The Max scale. “...rates a 9 Max on hand, but only a 4.5 Max on malleability....” “The composite Max score is 7.65....”

Question: How would you disinfect a straw boater's lining?

Picked up an old school boater from the 1910-1920 era. It looks like if it spent its last century in the attic. How would I successfully disinfect the hat so that I may wear it? How would I go about cleaning the dust & grim on the exterior?

I'm not sure on how to clean the straw, but as far as disinfecting goes... some time spent in the freezer should help take care of that.

I like your second attempt, more fedora-like to me. Personally, I'd use a wider ribbon, maybe 1.5 inches and see how it looks.

I got the Sunbody hat Saturday ,I got the ventilated open crown 5 1/2 inches tall and had them cut the Brim down to 3 inches and put a Khaki edge on it and a light blue 5/8 hatband.
I put a center crease on the hat with a crown pinch about 2 inches wide.
I first tried a height of 5 inches for the front of the crown,too high ,next I tried a 4 3/4 inch height and looked pretty good,then I tried a 4 1/2 inch crown height and my wife liked that the best so for now anyway that is where it will stay.
fairly shallow dents.
I am to get several different colored bands.
Thinking about trying a 7/8 band.

I decided to play around with the hat and gave the hat crown deeper dents on the sides,put more of a pinch, pulled the Brim down more in the front,took the back of the crown more and reshaped the top of the crown from the center dent I had originally put in it.
I like the way the hat looks now a lot better.

The ol' Scientific Hat Finishing and Renovating book advises that a full cleaning of straw hats is best done with a solution of oxalic acid, but requires a full stripping and reblocking of the hat.

I don't know who, if anybody, can provide this service for a vintage boater. I would contact Art Fawcett as a start, if he can't do it, he may know of someone who can.

You can surface clean the straw with a brush, of course.

I tried a couple of foe elastic ribbons I just got in the mail this morning.
they are the orange and the green 5/8" and a yard long.

I tied them on and used them as 5/8" ribbon then I twisted the ribbon and laid one ribbon on top of the other for about a full inch ribbon.

With the blue ribbon that came on the hat I now have 3 easily changed bands for the hat.

I would like member opinions of which width 5/8" or 1" looks the best on this hat ?

I measured the ribbon stacked one on top of the other and it measures 1 1/8 inch.

With the crown height as it's currently creased, I agree the wider ribbon looks better.

Hey guy, I might be in a minority here (probably), but my philosophy is that it is better to err on the side of minimalism than maximalism. However, in the two choices you have (5/8" or 1"), both are minimal ribbons. I like the larger one on this hat. The most important thing of all is, which is your favorite.

Son of a gun. I hadn't seen any "error" messages until after I read this post. Shortly thereafter I started getting them when I tried to "like" a few posts in another thread; 10-15 seconds later, they stopped.

Where can I get inner boater hat linings? I can source felt hat linings but not the boater hat linings with the mesh around it.

Does anyone have any experience with the Bailey of Hollywood Litefelt Blixen or Stetson Frederick fedoras? They do look pretty nice for a non-fur hat. I'm only going with non-fur because of budget. Still hope someday to get a fur felt hat.
