All of these threads are just threads started by members, some of them long ago. They all work in the same way. The members run the forum and the Bartenders only step in when there’s a problem. Ideally, you’ll find an existing thread to post to as starting new threads where an existing one already exists is frowned on.

I came here to have fun and learn and participate.

I dont understand why starting a new thread would be frowned on?

As you pointed out Almost anything anyone might ask has already been asked but I could not figure out how to post the question where I wanted to post it .

Regardless, I am looking forward to having a good time here, interacting with and maybe making some new friends.

This is as much a repository of information as it is a social networking site. Many of the members, and others, come here looking for information. Keeping the subjects in consolidated threads makes that easier. So, if you want to know or add to the knowledge of how to date a Stetson by size tag, the info is in the thread "Dating Stetsons by Size Tag." Similarly, we have threads dedicated to different brands and hat models made over the years. Keeping them together makes it easier for users to find what they're looking for in one place without trying to tease it out of multiple threads Cruise over to "Important Hat Forum Threads" and you'll get a feel for it.

For what it is worth it is nice mid brown tone.

Re the Leisure Time in Regency Fawn... I got one a few months back, and it is really less of a "mid brown" than I expected based on Akubra's pics. It is an unusual gray-brown shade that is very hard to capture accurately, at least with a smartphone camera. This was taken in open shade and isn't quite right... though my skintone and shirt are!

Don't get me wrong, it's a great hat... just not really the "brown" I was expecting.

How curious, this hat was described as grey, like you, I like the hat but the colour description leaves me wondering if I should see an optician.

I just got my hat from VS Custom Hats. Art Fawcett was able to take the size from 7 1/2 to just under 7 1/4. How he did it - I don't know. But the fit is perfect and no break line on the brim. It looks brand new. I will post pictures in the Art Fawcett VS Hall of Fame. I told Art I wanted the hat to be a "Art Fawcett" fedora when he was done.

I have seen Ignacio do that many times. Welcome to the club, Bill! Not bad at all, is it?

Oh. I asked him to make a brim wider on one, and the break line does show, but I didn't care. He said that it would stop being so noticeable with time, and he was right.

Most Loungers don’t care too much if you start a new thread, but it does make the forum unwieldy and hard to find like information in one spot. The Bartenders (moderators) routinely delete new threads and merge the contents into existing threads. This has happened to me too. Instead if having 62 threads on hat etiquette we can keep the information all together in one.

Do feel free to create a new thread for something unique.

We are all equals here and I hope you feel welcome. This is a great place to learn of hats and no one should feel uncomfortable posting. The only things that get you in real trouble here are religion, politics, and non-family friendly posts...keep it rated PG and you’ll be fine. And please accept my apology if my previous comment was worded poorly.

Agreed and then some!!

Bcraig: nothing more frustrating then finding a hat on eBay you just gotta have, don’t have a clue, with not much time left and not being able to find any info trying to sift through countless dead threads etc. etc.
Then again...nothing like googling it and finding a coherent thread...bingo!!
Stick around and you will see.
Welcome to the lounge.

Damn, on my monitor it looks more like a Granite or Stetson Cariboo than a Fawn....nothing like mine.

Again, it's partly a case of my phone not handling certain light/colors so well. It's off in the red/gold hues, I've had a number of sunset pictures that came out looking nothing like the sunset did to the human eye. My first selfie with this hat, taken in dappled sun with spring leaves just opening, is a bit overlit, and it appears even less brown:

Anyway, it is a weird brown-gray, an unusual color. Great hat, odd color.

This color is very similar to my Lightning Ridge in Heritage Fawn. It has the same brown/gray tones. To my eye the brown stands out a tad bit more than the gray, but it often photographs a bit more gray. You're definitely right though. They are strange colors.

Hi
I have measured my head and found that I have a 23 inch head which I have found out is basically 59cm.
Which is basically 7 3/8 hat size.
My Question is about the brands
Is a 1940s/1950s vintage 7 3/8 the same size as a 2019 7 3/8 ? Assuming of course there has been no stretching due to wear or mechanical means.
Any Practical difference between a Stetson 7 3/8 and other brands of 7 3/8 ?

Thanks

Hat sizes have been theoretically consistent for decades. However, there can be variations from brand to brand and model to model. It's kind of like buying a pair of jeans - some fit perfectly and others are a little looser/tighter. For vintage, it could vary a bit more, depending if the previous wearer had a slightly larger head and it conformed to their size over time, or if perhaps the sweatband has shrunk a bit over time.

I'm a 7 1/4 and, for my part, if I buy a 7 1/4 vintage it generally fits, though some are looser, some are a bit snug. I also have a few 7 1/8s that fit just fine.

If you're buying a new hat, stick with your size. Vintage can be more of a crapshoot, but more often than not, a 7 3/8 should work out for you.

Also be aware an English 7 3/8 isn't the same as an American one.

+1 to the response by @Frunobulax.

My vintage collection is quite small, only a half dozen, consisting of 7-1/4 and 7-3/8 as I am between sizes. A couple of the 7-1/4 fit perfect as if it was a custom fit. A couple fit on the tighter side, but still wearable without any issue. My 7-3/8 fit comfortably, but my 7-3/8 long oval fits a little loose. As long as it's close, a little steam and just wearing the hat will help to conform it to your head. If necessary you can always invest in some band blocks to help maintain the size, or a hat jack to slightly increase the size.

While I can't speak from personal experience, from what I've read on the forums here it sounds like Borsalino's, especially European market with Punti (Pointe) sizing, run a little on the smaller side. For a more modern maker, I've seen multiple people say to go on the higher side for Akubra as it sounds like they slightly shrink to fit during the break in process. After that you can wear the hell out of it and it will retain size/shape through whatever Mother Nature throws at it. As such, I would aim to get 7-3/8 for these two makers. On my list of hats to add...

So yes, it is a bit of a crapshoot. But if you can take it in stride it's all part of the fun of finding vintage hats. Happy hunting!

I can +1 that.

I'm a perfect 23"/58.4 cm, which means directly between 7 1/4 and 3/8. My Fed IVs are all 7 3/8 (59), and have shrunk to fit perfectly and maintain their size.

I'm having a hard time deciding on what Indiana Jones hat I should get and I keep going back and forth about whether I should get the Penman Everyman hat or a Steele and Jones (Superior Quality). I would greatly appreciate it if I could get some opinions and if people could tell me what they think of both hats.

Both are nice. ALSO nice are the Herbert Johnson (original?) version, Mark Kidder (Adventure-bilt) and many other hatters' interpretations. You should have no trouble finding THE perfect-to-your-liking IJ hat. It's really your decision...

The difficulty will be finding accessories, like a Batarang, etc.
