View attachment 135046 View attachment 135047 View attachment 135048 Hi new member here I've been looking on here for some info on this barrister I picked up at a by the pound goodwill. Just wondering what anyone could tell me.
This is an interesting hat, a definite keeper! Barrister is an odd brand, probably a "jobber" brand made in Danbury CT in the late 1950s. We have seen some of these made by the big companies for sale as entry level hats sold in department stores. The store name on the price tag is probably no help without a city/state on it. I'd spiff it up and keep it as a conversation hat. Is it your size?

Should have listened to Alan's advice:
Brad Bowers (the Hatted Professor) said:

"Neat find!

Barrister was a brand of the LaSalle Hat Company. The brand dates to 1935, but your hat looks later '40s to me. LaSalle was the Saleskys' (Champ Hats) company, started in 1911."

This is the word, take it as gospel. Mystery solved.

The question would be, is this hat of this kind of age? Possibly, it does have kind of a 1950s construction and look to it. Wonder how long LaSalle (which are really nice hats) stayed around producing the Barrister as a lower end brand?

OK, I was able to get what they told me was Nafta gas at a paint store. Submerged a hat in it for a half hour, took it out at 4.30 pm yesterday, and it still smells of gasoline. Was I given the wrong stuff? Fortunately, the hat was a beater. How long should Nafta smell take to disappear?

I normally get a residual smell for a few hours or more after completely dry. Give or take, a nice breeze or some sunshine helps.

Show us a shot of the can, please.

I can't upload the pics, because Tapatalk doesn't work yet, and when I try through the regular site it keeps telling me the file is too large.
I will try later.
There is a small sticker that says Gas Nafta

Just rec'd my Stetson Premier Stratoliner (Berkely Hat) - called outlets but no sign of my size. Is it normal for these NOT to come in a Stetson box? Every other Stetson I have has come in one. Looks nice, however, though some obvious stiching spots noticable.

btw - to me, the outlet didn't seem a whole lot cheaper - quoted me ~$25 less than what I paid. Maybe it's my size.

I hit your links upthread and that's the right stuff.

Maybe try giving it a steam bath to volatilize any residual stuff. I always get a faint whiff for a few hours afterward, but it goes away. I also soak mine for closer to 8-10 hours, unlike Doug. But I've shortened it a bit after he gave his opinion. Normally, I throw it in and go to bed. Then fish it out in the morning.

Did it clean up OK?

Naptha doesn't smell like gasoline. It smells like (and probably is) dry cleaning fluid.

The felt looks brand new! Excellent.
I went ahead and resoaked it in gasolina blanca, which is what my wife says they use in the dry cleaner's. The smell of the Nafta was almost gone in 27 hours, but I think the gasolina blanca will be eliminated sooner.
I will know when I get home.
