I have had luck by taking crumpled newspaper in a large plastic bag. Put the hat in there & leave for 2-3 days. The newspaper wicks the odors out of the hat somehow. I got an ebay lid from a heavy pipe smoker once & this did the trick, thanks to Rusty...

Thanks, Deputy! Much obliged, and also thanks to Rusty as well. I think I'll try this version instead of Scottyrocks' method - around these parts I'd be more likely to see a coyote run off with my lid rather than a squirrel, and I wouldn't want either one to happen.:)

Chinaski - If the crumpled newspaper (which works wonders on removing odors from many things) doesn't take away as much of the perfume smell as you would like, try adding a small amount of charcoal wrapped in the paper or small mesh netting, something along the lines of tulle. You can find charcoal in the pet dept for aquarium filters.

BTW - I posted pix of my hat, the Surpreme Steston, on page 173, in addition to the information I'm requesting, I am curious about felt used in this type of hat. Are most fedoras made with a certain amount of animal fur in them? I've been reading some of the other members questions & it is mentioned a few times.

Thanks, Sheba, I'll keep your suggestion in mind as well. And to return the favor, pretty much all the hats that are of interest on the Lounge are fur felt. They are either rabbit, hare, nutria, or beaver, or a mix of these. Additionally, there are wool felts (which are also animal) but they are not quite as valued as they have a tendency to taper or otherwise lose shape.

The newspaper in a bag trick can help. I have also had good results with baking soda (though not everyone has). As also mentioned below, plenty of fresh air can do wonders as well. That may be the single best remedy. I have used all these methods in combination to remove various odors. You may or may not have success in a few days, depending on the situation, it can take longer. But I have found that these methods do work in time.

Zetwal, thank you as well for weighing in on my question. I appreciate the response!

Here's a dumb one. My current hat sizing experience has been of the randomly try things on until something fits right variety. Now that I'm living in a location that's fairly hat shop impoverished, I've had to make the transition to online shopping.

SO. My head is 58.5cm (Long Oval), puts me squarely between sizes (Actually, I think I'm even hanging on the border between 'Med' and 'Lrg'). Would you recommend shopping for 7 1/4 and stretching or 7 3/8 and picking up some felt inserts? Or is it just one of those 'Hard to Size' situations?

I would get the 7 3/8 if I were you. Stretching sometimes works well, but sometimes it distorts the brim or something else - with shrinking or padding you have many more options and it almost always works.

I apologize in advance as this has got to be an oft repeated noob question, but how should one store their lids? I tried some key word searching in the forum but came up with so much drift I thought I’d just go ahead and ask.

As of the middle of next week I will have two Akubra Fed IV’s and I want to store them properly when not wearing them. Should I use hat boxes, some kind of rack or hanger? Or perhaps even a stand? I don’t want to display them or anything, I was just hoping for safe and proper storage.

There were a few threads on storage that may not be coming up since the change-over.
I have the ones getting noggin time on hat racks while the others are stored in boxes in the closet. Some of my scrubs are in boxes in the storage room above the garage but the good ones get climate control. My VERY nice ones are in their appropriate container = Stratoliner in an original Strat box, Stetson 100 in a 100 case, Stetson 25 in orignal box.
It all depends on your space & how easy you want access to be, IMHO.... nothing proper about it!!!!

Always easier to pad than to stretch, especially vintage w/o risking a busted sweatband. New ones tend to draw in over time so there I'd go up to 7 3/8 also. Now there is a burden to this if you are looking for vintage, 7 3/8 is an EXPENSIVE size to be buying pristine vintage lids!!!! :eeek:

One consideration is that when I stored my hats on a rack or flat on a surface in highly-used rooms, over time the hats gather dust, which is visible on the dark-colored hats. This only became evident when I would buy a new hat, and I saw how dust-free it was. It made me unhappy about the storage of my hats. Yes, you can brush the dust off with a special brush, but I wonder whether that ever restores the luster that they had when new; maybe, maybe not. So my best new dark hat that I bought, stays in a box.

We all started out as noobs, brother. :)

The hat boxes that your hats will be arriving in will probably be sufficient (they work just fine for my hats). For storing indefinitely, or for situations in which the boxes might get damaged, I would look into investing into a legitimate hat box. Several retailers offer one (Miller Hats comes to mind), and you may be able to find some on the Bay.

For a short-term solution, though, the boxes your hats arrive in should do just fine. They are secure, hold the hat in place, and come with a cool carry handle! Hope this helped you, and congratulations on the new lids!

I have one of these hanging inside my closet:

I dont worry about dust because I brush my hats regularly. This particular rack, as well as others, I am sure, keep the brim in the proper shape, and I dont have to mess with boxes and lids that take up space I dont have.

vintage Stetson hat sizing

Hello FL members,
I am new here and new to hats.I am looking at buying a Whippet new never worn it is suppose to be a 7 1/4 but the circumference is approx 22" which seems small for a 71/4 size hat.what is the proper circumference for the vintage Stetson Hat's in 7 1/4-7 3/8s?
Hat size charts seem to be all over the place,I wear a Bailey Cowboy hat and is a 7 1/4 it is 22 5/8" it fits great.
Any help on this issue with sizes would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,B.R. C.C.

For my head, it seems centimeters is the best scale to measure. My 7 5/8 is a 61cm & 24 inches. 7 3/8 would be a 59cm, 7 1/4 would be a 58cm.
Getting to inches from that is up to you...

22 inches (if it really is that) would be pretty much the same as a size 7. Hats (even vintage) in the 7 1/4 to 7 3/8 range should be more in the 22 5/8 to 23 range.

22 5/8, as you have observed, is indeed within the 7 1/4 range. A little smaller and it would most likely move into 7 1/8 territory.

The seller measured it and said it was 22 the vintage tag still there says it is 7 1/4,Would it shrink that much from sitting? It is new vintage C.C.

Sellers often report circumference inaccurately. Unless the circumference was measured properly, there is always a chance that a hat tagged 1/4 is actually larger than 22 inches.
