There has been a number of conversations about this subject on the Lounge. I remember reading about stiffeners recently. I would suggest a Google search for this with Fedora Lounge attached. The Lounge Search box at the top of the page works OK as well. Shellac was the traditional stiffener.
Thank you for anwer, but i dont know english very well, and the search for specific information on the forum is a bit difficult for me

Hi! have a question)
does hatters use salvitose in his work?
Felt is slightly similar to cardboard after using salvitose. But I want to make a dense hat with wide brims.

This is used mostly for "hobby crafters" and I know of no hatters that use it. I've never used it myself. There may be others out there but I doubt it.

If they dont use it, how they make reale dense hat?

Starting with a really sturdy dense felt.
Look for good felt stiffener. Don't go for the water based one. It's useless but they sell it more because that they can ship. The chemical one they can't really ship everywhere because of regulations.

Density and stiffness are two different things. As Esther said, density comes from a finely made felt, stiffness is a different issue. There are many stiffeners on the market that are in use, I personally make my own.
a dense hat is not a stiff hat ... and a stiff hat is not always dense

Ok! If i want make hat like this, what i need to do?
1) If i understand, i need good steam machine for shrinking? (Dont use the water)
2) Find a good stiffner? (i find information about shellac with spirt, but some people said that he changed the color of goods)

Sorry if I'm wrong in the conclusions

Hi All, as by subject, how packable is the Akubra Traveller? can it be rolled and stowed away for some time? or is just the crown that is squishable?

Also I'd like to ask, is the felt 100% rabbit? how good is it?

Finally, I understand there is some form of wire in the bound edge. If I were to trim the edge and thus lose the wire, would that improve rollability? what about shape retention?

I ask because I am using a Tilley T3 for fieldwork. I like the fact I can basically pack it in my pack and then take it out and use it in the field (this use has transformed the hat in a boonie basically -- and expensive boonie!). Still, I prefer felt hats and I am curious to know how the Traveller compares

Cheers
