I have a sad question to ask...one of my latest hat purchases are a mint vintage Resistol thin ribbon...the hat is so nice and fits Daniel like it was made for his head....BUT I used a clean new hat brush on it, the hat is a light tan almost silverbelly color. The more I brushed the hat to get off all the vintage "dust" (which had that musty old smell real bad to it) the hat started to have what looks like a stain spotting on the very front of the hat! Looks like freckles almost. Now this hat was refurbed a long time ago by Resistol...so I have to wonder what happened to it, back in the day? Could the refurb put some sort of a color powder on the hat body? I was thinking I could get rid of this problem by cleaning the hat...I have some super powerful cleaner DYO that is like dry cleaning fluid, I scrubbed, dabbed, sponged, and the area looked like what this stain or what ever it was seemed to be looking better...until this liquid dried...the freckled stain look is still there but WORSE! OUCH! Looks like how you would look when you "peel" from a sun tan...the discolor....as many Hats as we have had, never seen anything like it ever. We will keep the hat, it will make a good winter hat...but I am at odds about this stain thing. Anyone ever encounter such a thing with a hat? This DYO cleaner would with ease, remove axle grease from a felt hat! I have used it on hats and suede and it has always removed any stain I have encountered.

You know, my Resistol beater does the same thing. I eventually just gave up trying to brush it (until that one time I forgot why I stopped brushing that one hat). I didn't think powder dye was a thing in the 60s?

The sad thing on this hat is, the felt appeared spotless, was just like new never worn! It had that vintage musty dusty smell and I brush every single new hat we get here, I take the hat outside and spend about 45 minutes on each one. This stain or discoloration started appearing after just a few minutes. There seemed to be a lot of dust or powder come off the hat. It was horrible and actually smelled very strong, I had to stay "up wind" from the cloud coming off this thing. Now when I brush nothing comes off. I am thinking of trying to sprinkle some baby powder on the area and just let it sit a day or two.

Thanks so much for at least letting me know we are not the only one owning a weirdo hat like this! Haha! It is still a great hat, just with the freaky freckles!
