Hello Everyone,

I am new to the forum and am looking for some help with a hat I have. It is a Zapf hat, and the only real relevant information that I have found about was from here. I think that it is long hair felt, but I have no idea how old it is or exactly what style it is. I'm not even sure if it is a men's or women's hat lol. Lastly, does anyone have any idea what it is worth? It does not fit me and since it is in such great condition, I would like to pass it on to someone that will adore it. I have done some research on the company that makes the hat, but have only found general information. Also, on one of the inner labels it says "Tamsweg," which I know is a town in Austria but I haven't been able to find if this brand of hat was crafted there. Sigh lol I haven't had much luck. Here are the pics:

It's a ladies hat and fairly recent. Zapf (since 1893) is still in business today and they make high quality Trachten hats. Antilope is the felt finish. I have a few of their men's hats but not any old ones (1950s or older). I am not sure how much you can get for it (my guess around $30.00). I would try selling it on Ebay or at a local German festival. If you want more information check here:

http://www.zapf.at/english/

Also feel free to post it on the German - Austrian thread.

Teddy Roosevelt Rough Rider Hat

Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a copy of the hat Theodore Roosevelt wore in the Spanish American War? It has a brim pinned up on one side.
Thanks.

Hat-clips on lunch counter chairs. Has anyone seen these?

I remember during my childhood going into older restaurants that had counters with swivel chairs. The chairs had backrests. In some restaurants, the back-side of the backrests would have these little push-button devices that would release a clip. I asked my parents one time what those were.

"Oh, those are to store your hat while you're eating."

Of course at the time, it was already too late to see them in action. Men were no longer wearing hats. But has anyone else seen these types of clips on the back of restaurant chairs? A quick google hasn't found anything so far.....

Ok, My question;

Im looking for the patterns to make one of Those 1950s Leather B-1 Type Hats I recently posted about, anyone know where to start looking, It would be a serious Help considering I will have to do it trial and error otherwise using a compass and some tracing paper.

there has to be *the* original pattern out there somewhere for the 4-pannel style ball hat.

thanks.

New Stetsons run about a size large, I've found old ones to be fairly close to right on. A few have been a little tight in which case they get a little stretch or I live with it. One was a little big. It varies with how they were stored, how much they were worn, sweated in, natural variation in hat blocks, etc. Rarely have they run large in my case. I only have 5 vintage ones. Others may tell you different.

Well, the other thing with vintage hats is that there's really no telling how much a hat may have shrunk in the intervening years. It may have fit perfectly 40 years ago, but run a bit tight today. Not that I have a huge collection of vintage Stetsons (just a few), but the only one that fits large is the 100, and I understand from others that this was quite normal for the 100's.

Totally agreed. I picked up two vintage hats today, one a 7 1/4, the other a 7 1/2, both Hat Corp hats, and they fit me exactly the same. How's that for wonky?

Idea for a beater fedora that can get sweaty?

Here in NYC it gets humid even in milder temperatures. I sweat more than average, and my pate is bald too! So what would be a good idea for a fedora that I can allow to get sweaty, say when moving, schlepping boxes, maybe even hiking? Thanks so much!

I bought a new Stetson "Packard" just for that purpose. If it gets too shvitzy, smokey and gross, I don't care, as I can still get another. But NEVER in a vintage, Greg.

Buy a Tilley synthetic ventilated hat. They look good, are very light and comfortable and can be machine washed. I have quite a few hats but I can't think of one that would happily stand up to a heavy sweat and come out the better for it.

I do have a Tilley Airflo in OD green for hiking. I agree on all counts about its virtues! But for this particular piece, I was thinking of something more traditional looking....
