That's the situation with this hat, very supple, shapes without any need for steam. That's also pretty much the approach I've taken, formed it into a shape I like and have left it alone. Just wanted to make certain I was caring for it properly as I don't have a very expansive collection as yet and this is pretty much my star of the collection to date. I picked it up more as a collectors piece knowing approximately it's age and rarity but as I said I've grown quite fond of it and have taken to wearing it quite often.

Hi Swanky. The shape of all the gun clubs by stetson are the same except for the royal flush which has a gambler shape. The difference is in the color and hat bands and edge Finnish. they are nice hats. I like the Akubra Snowy River the crown is not as high though. The Lightning Ridge from Akubra is also very nice.

The Whippet that Stetson makes now I like alot. The tawny color is great. Older hats are better by far but depending on your size can cost a fortune. I try on most of the hats that come into the shop that are near my size to check the sizing . When I put on a Gun Club I say that looks nice. When I put on a Whippet I say I wont one.

I have an early 50s Borso Alessandria (thin ribbon, bound edge) that I store open crown.
I shape it with each wearing but don't change the crease after that until I go back to open crown to put in the box.
I do all this dry, no steam. Steam can activate the shellac & "set" the crease.
I don't do "hard" or sharp folds & I don't put it on or take it off by the pinch.
Flexing at the same spot over & over again will wear that spot, just look at Johnny Depp's hat.
They don't make felt like this anymore at Borsalino.

In an email exchange with another, newer Lounge member, it became apparent that there might be need to dig up the old thread roughly titled "What to tell your wife when she asks if you got another hat." I wasn't successful through any Google search, but maybe I have the thread name wrong, etc. Anybody remember that one, or have a better search engine? We must save this poor man!

I have a felt fedora that's a bit more pliable than I'd like. I'm curious, is there something I can do to stiffen the felt a bit? Any sggestions are appreciated.

You can try to steam it to re-activate some of the shellac in the felt.

Hi, I acquired this old Thomas Beggs fedora, and I am wondering if anyone can tell me what type of fur this is. All the other types of these hats I've found are made of very short felted fur or wool. Just bought a 40-50s Stetson hburg that has printing on sweat band that says "made In England" under license to Stetson and store stamp from Sweden . Any one know what hat maker in uk was under license with Stetson . Have not received hat yet but will post pics when I can.

"The Chief Executive" LBJ hat

Good day, Fedora Lounge folks -- here's hoping I'm posting these questions to all of you correctly! I bought the hat pictured here at an auction last week (along with a 1960s Stetson Open Road, which I was able to date thanks to your website!) and am curious why it's nearly impossible to find info about it anywhere on the internet. Last night I resorted to searching via google news archives and came up with the accompanying article from 1964 stating that Hat Corporation of America would be producing a model called "The LBJ." Can any of you tell from the markings on this hat whether it's the one made by Hat Corp.? Is this hat collectible/valuable? Thanks for any info you can provide!

Here are some details: There's a metal pin of a cowboy hat and the initials "LBJ" on the outside of the hat. The liner reads "The Chief Executive" over an image of the U.S. Capitol dome. Stamped on the sweatband in white is "The LBJ," but it's too faded to photograph (I tried!). Stamped in gold on the hat, under the sweatband near the size label, is what looks like a "G," but I'm not sure. The underside of the liner is stamped "A718" in red and on the underside of the sweatband is "711 xx" written in what looks like yellow chalk.

None of the details match Hat Corporation of America hats from the same period, so it's doubtful that it's that particular model. It might have come from one of the large factories in Danbury who did jobber work.
