Jared,

I looked on the internet and haven't found anything in regards to the letters. Any idea if they still make them?

Hmm, I don't know if they still make them. Frankly, after three generations in business, you tend to accumulate stuff that isn't made anymore. Here are the ones we have laying around...they've got what was at one time an adhesive back (like the glue on an envelope):

Don't know if this is a similar composition as the ones pictured....

I change mine on a regular basis. Always the same. Go to Settings.... Edit Avatar.... put the URL to the picture in where it asks for the URL. Hit SAVE. Done.

Resistol hat ID help

I just bought this hat (i have not received it yet) and was wondering what the style is.
I guess I should have figured that out BEFORE I bought it but too late now.
It looks a bit like a porkpie with an "open crown" or maybe it was made this way.
Has any one seen this crown shape before and if you have what is it called?

How do I stretch a fedora?

Hey guys,

I was lucky enough to pick up a beautiful Cavanagh Fedora a couple months ago at a local Costume store for $50. WITH original box! And I must say it is my favorite hat in my collection. The only problem is it is ever so slightly too small for my big head and I was wondering if anyone had some tips to stretch it without losing the shape of the brim?

I do have a hat stretcher but didn't want to experiment on my own until I got some advice. I will post pictures when I get home.

Right now I can get away with wearing it, but its just a little tight (even after a haircut).

Should I take it to a fedora shop?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Tom

I think it is the same exact hat as in this thread " http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?51269-FS-1950s-size-7-1-4-Cavanagh-fedora "

Tom,

That is a nice hat. A gray goes with a lot of things!

It sounds like you don't have much stretching to do, maybe one size. I've stretched a couple of 6 7/8 hats, following suggestions I read here, to fit my size 7 head. The main things I've learned were:

1) use distilled water in a spray bottle, as tap water may contain contaminants that could stain the felt;

2) spray all along the base of the crown on the outside of the crown, not inside where the sweatband is;

3) put in the hat jack according to instructions, i.e., with the metal screw rod parallel to the long axis of the hat. Then expand the screw a reasonable distance -- i.e., don't screw it out until the brim looks like a banana!

4) Leave it in for an hour or so, then take it out and wear the hat for a bit.

5) Repeat as necessary. You may need to leave the hat jack in overnight, or you might eventually have to leave it in, slightly expanded, whenever you take the hat off at home, so the felt won't contract back to its earlier size.

Others may have posted more details, but that's the basic routine, right, guys?

Depends on a bunch of things, ht24.

When I'm looking to buy a hat, I ask myself what it's worth to me. That's really what matters, if I thought I'd get $120 of enjoyment from the hat I'd buy it. If not I wouldn't.

You can also easily get a feel for the market value of Borsalinos. They are always to be found on eBay and here in the Classifieds for reference.

Has anyone had any experience with Atwood hats. They have a palm leaf hat that I am interested in.

A few questions you need to ask yourself - what size do you typically wear? What size is this hat?

If you're moving up more than two sizes, you're probably out of luck. Stretching from a 7 to 7 3/8 would more or less work, but would warp the brim no matter how slow you stretched. Even moving from a 7 to 7 1/4 can do this. You must remember that the sweatband and hat ribbon were cut for the original size and not a larger size, so you'll want to be careful.

Benz's advise is sound and if you're only stretching one size up, you should be fine without much, if any, distortion. As Benz has noted, go slowly, be patient; stretch just enough.

I have had an Atwood western palm leaf for a couple of years.
They are tightly woven & mine has held up to rain nicely. Palm leaf does get heavy when wet & doesn't breathe well either = gets fairly warm.
Mine has vent grommet holes in the crown & I have seen with woven ventilation too. Something to consider.
Has anyone had any experience with Atwood hats. They have a palm leaf hat that I am interested in.

Thanks gtdean48,

The only one I saw with vents other than eyelets looked like the holes were drilled in.
It would be a summer rain hat. Ventilation would be nice but not a deal breaker.

I had attempted to stretch a 7 1/8 to a 7 3/8 and the buldges at the front and back, at ribbon height, made the hat look like a flower pot, if you can imagine an upside down flower pot with the expanded upper rim (now on the bottom). I, too, recommend stretching up no more than one size.

Thanks guys. Yes the hat is a 7 1/4 and Im between a 7 1/4 and a 7 3/8". All my other hats are 7 3/8" with a foam strip to tighten it up, so Im really only needing to stretch it a half size.

I'll try the spray bottle Idea. Would filtered Britta water work well? It's truly a great hat and in absolutely perfect condition, not even any stains in the lining.
I'll give this a shot and let you know my results (with photos)

Thanks again!
