Here's a random question, as I don't think that it deserves a thread of it's own!

Is there anyone in the Minnesota - Twin Cities area who has experience with getting a good crease in a new hat with an Open Crown? I've never gone that route, but I may be doing so with my first Gannon hat. It should be on the block in the next few days.

I don't want to mess this up the first time around, so if there's anyone in the Twin Cities area that would show me any of their tips, that'd be awesome... I'll bring sandwiches or beverages of your choice, whatever your thing may be!

To allay at least some of your fears or concerns.....good felt is incredibly forgiving. It is much like a good clay and can be molded easily with steam. If you don't like the crease, give it more steam and take it back to open crown. JJHat Centre has some good YouTube video's on hat bashing as does David Morgan and I am sure dozens of others.

Second, let me see if I understand your post above. You're asking if any of us nitwits can show you how to crease a hat because you've never done it before, but you don't trust an experienced hatter like Mr. Gannon to do it right? You have me curious about what type of crease you want.

Thanks, happy to be here! I had actually asked if that was an option just for a boxy teardrop, but there seemed to be a little sway on his side to try out the Open crown if that is what I'm really going for. I also like the idea of being able to just do it myself with any other open crowns going forward, as it just leaves more options to play with.

I certainly would trust Michael to give me any tips in person, but the problem therein lies with him living in your part of the country, while I am in the middle.

Here's a question I have been wondering about. Do proportions of the same model hat change with size? And if so when is the next step. In other words would for example a Stetson Open Road (seems a good example because there are so many of them around) have the exact same measurements through all its sizes or would the brim width and the crown height increase with larger sizes?

I'm going to say yes, measurements except for the crown diameter remain the same regardless of size. Using Akubra's Federation IV as the example, it's dimensional brim is advertised as being 2-1/2" (63mm) wide on the sides and 2-3/4" (70mm) front and back regardless of size. So on the smallest size available (54) the brim will appear to be wider than on the largest size (64) because of the difference in the measurement of the crowns.

I think it depends on the model and manufacturer. Here's what Matt Deckard had to say about the Fortune and Glory a while back on COW:

The open crown height of a 7 ¼ block is 5 1/5 inches. The crown height, like with all our styles, is graduated, so larger block sizes are incrementally taller and smaller block sizes are incrementally shorter.

Has anyone ever figured out what this nomenclature really means? I don't believe it was used on presentation hats. I don't believe it was used on employee service time or retirement hats nor do I believe in this case that Bill Bever was a Stetson employee. The hat is a Sovereign so I'm at a loss. I have seen the same nomenclature on other hats.

I don't know for how many years it occurred nor what year it began or ended but Stetson produced Boss Of The Plains for "officials" of the Death Valley '49ers. The one I purchased a few weeks back has hallmarks of a 60's hat so this hat was made in an era when the BOP was long out of production therefore not offered to the general public (at least in the "classic" style. I've seen catalogs from the 60s where a "BOP" is offered but it's got fenders and a cattleman's crease). I've ordered custom Gibson's from local dealerships before. Maybe via a western shop you could order a custom hat from Stetson?

The only factoid I can contribute is that Hatco still has the "Especially For" die. The one below was embossed for musician Nikki Lane

Have they always been on all of my posts??

Yep, at least they were. They seem to have disappeared now... I usually view the Lounge on my home computer, but occasionally on my phone. The computer shows signature lines, user location, and some other things that you don't see on the phones.

Not to worry. It’s not as though we all read it every time we looked at your post. It’s rather innocuous and easy to look past once read the first time.

A couple years ago someone here suggested putting your hat size in your signature line. That’s resulted in at least two vintage hats being added to my collection.

Mine have always posted sideways unless I cropped the photo. No clue why. If I crop the photo, any side and another amount, the photos post right-side up. It would be nice if I didn’t have to do this.

Yet another pita trying to stay up to date on the Lounge :-(

Happens whenever I post straight from my phone. If I save them from my google photos onto my iPad and post from there they come up fine. Or as Brent said any slight crop seems to solve it
