Anyone know if any of the hat sellers are going to be running sales soon? Del Monicos, hatWRKS,JJ, etc
I'm looking for a STETSON SPECIAL EDITION STRATOLINER, SAGE in 7 1/2 I really don't need it which is why I am trying to find one at a price I can't pass up, lol. The ones I am seeing in stock are $195 up, I should qualify NOT looking for Hemp.

It seems Delmonicos has regular sales.

Does anybody know why my hat stiffener leaves marks and bleaches sometimes my colors? :( It's really nasty sometimes. I tried with and without iso alcohol...but still the same.
I use the hydrolac Powder and a regular Shellac.
No difference...:(
Left spots on a brown and yellow-ish hat lately. Help please!

I have never had that happen. I use Super Blonde flakes purchased on Ebay mixed with denatured alcohol. It is important to use denature alcohol as it is the purest. Maybe it is the isopropynal that is causing the issue. I use it on all colours of felt....no issues.

A shot in the dark here...on one of the pre-game shows Thanksgiving day there was an interview segment and the reporter was wearing a flat brim OR style and the underside of the brim was red. Presumably this was dye or fabric glued to the brim. I could not get to my camera fast enough to get a picture. Did anyone else see that hat and/or have any leads on the maker? Not really my style but I'm interested to see how it was made.

In my search for hats I run across hats like you’ve described all the time. They all have looked like low quality fashion pieces to me. Perhaps there is a better made subset out there, but I haven’t seen them.

If you're making your own shellac stiffener, then you should be usung unwaxed clear/blonde shellac flakes dissolved in denatured alcohol. Leave the shellac to dissolve for at least 24h & then spray with light applications. About 10% shellac to 90% alcohol should give you reasonable stiffness, you can always up the shellac percentage a little if you want cardboard stiffness.

I could not find the clear so am using Super Blonde and it leaves no trace on the felt. My neighbour gave me a spray can of shellac but it has wax as do most/many premixed DIY store items so stay away from that.

In my search I also noticed there are different grades of denatured alcohol. They have varying % of methanol versus ethanol. The best I could find was 75% but I think it is available, if you can find it, at 90%...some are just 50%

Walmart has food grade denatured ethanol available online that is pretty pure:

But it’s not cheap.
Damn, I have been paying $20 for 3/4 litre and it is about 150 proof. When the damn border opens up I am buying some of Walmart's but will have to stay down the 48 hours as I amsure customs will charge me the taxes/duty on it as a consumable drink....and that is stupid expensive.

Some Everclear booze is 95% ethanol. Probably best to immediately mix in the shellac flakes to avoid the temptation. :)

I love this fedora, does anybody know a hat that looks similar to this one ? View attachment 285027

There are lots and lots of hats that look similar. You’re also in luck that those stingy brim hats aren’t all that popular and they can be found at great prices with some patience.

If you want new and not vintage, check out the Stetson Benchley or the Akubra Hampton. Not necessarily exact matches, but similar.

I used 90% but not like for medical use, so it shouldnt be as 'clean' as maybe needed. I'll try one from the pharmacy...
