FWIW, I bought a bunch of plain cardboard boxes, 12 x 12 x 6 and have put my hats in, upside down/crown down. I cushioned the bottom with the many bubble wraps that I have saved (the nice ones!), enclosed the crown in a small clear plastic bag, leaving the inside open to air. Then covered lightly with tissue paper. Labelled each box with generic white label stickers. My method is affordable, compact, and appears to protect the hats enough.

Actually, that's why I need 7 new boxes. The cardboard boxes that I have are collapsing, and skewing the shape of the brims. Although, I didn't use a plastic bag. Great minds think alike, eh?

I guess it depends upon what the thickness of the cardboard is. What is the thickness of the boxes you used? Mine are 32 ECT, which are durable enough for shipping, yet the boxes are smaller than lots of the vintage boxes, certainly smaller than the modern ones. There's no crushing these with any 130 to 140 g hats. Am currently researching cutting my own cardboard rings to insert to keep the crown up. Can't be too difficult, but we'll see.

Well, I just went ahead and ordered one $10 hat box from Bon Clique Bon Genre as a test. If it does not have the crown support ring, I actually have one or two hat rings left over from standard shipping boxes that I use as stands. Beyond those, its off to the craft store, I guess.

I am in the market for cardboard hat boxes with crown inserts
Don't know where you live but you can buy new fedora boxes for $4 & new Western boxes for $6 from Stetson Outlet Stores; Western Wear Stores usually have Western size boxes for sale that buyers don't take with their hats; crafts & hobby stores like Hobby Lobby sell round balsa wood boxes (without inserts) for $10 if you want something firmer than cardboard.

OT to hats, but cigar stores sell nice wood cigar & cardboard cigar boxes cheap too.

Turns out Bon Clique Bon Genre canceled my order due to US customs restrictions on package size. Therefore, I will be purchasing the most uncrushable hat box material: pure plastic.

This is a 19"x15"x7-3/4" storage box for ~$11. I decided on this type of box as an alternative to a hat can, since the shape of the cans does not seem to be stackable. The dimensions are large, as the cardboard hat boxes are 16.5"x14.5"x7". I will be improvising crown inserts out of poster board.

Can anyone help me out here: I have a Mac Lachlan where the sweatband isn’t sewn in the normal way. It looks regular until it comes to the front of the hat and the normal stitching stops. The sweatband is still attached at the front (I’m assuming it’s sewn), but it isn’t the same as the rest. The felt in the area is also scalloped. I know I’ve seen this scalloped felt before, but I never heard an explanation for it. Can anyone explain what this is and what the purpose is? Was there a reason for this type of sweatband attachment? Thanks in advance.

I’m wondering if it’s sort of a cushion system similar to that kinda corrugated area on some Borsalinos

I thought it was part of the Air-Vac system.

Since the "scalloping" is only around the forehaed area, it's function might have something to do with the control of the accumulation of sweat, prehaps the ridges & furrows offer better evaporation by channeling the air. It's certainly placed where sweat stains tend to develope.

I have tried, but I’ve never learned how to do this properly. Maybe I could get @DaveProc to help out? I’ve been interested for some time:

I'm sure this has been answered on FL before, and maybe even in this very thread, but I'm using a mobile site version on my phone, and searches never seem to work well. I apologize in advance.

I'm going from wearing a Ballcap I won at a Ham Radio Convention a few years ago, to being on the waiting list for a Custom Beaver Felt Gannon.

What, at a minimum do I need to properly care for this investment?

Thus far I'm coming up with:
  • Hat Brush
  • Hat Jack/Stretcher for it to dry on in case of getting wet.
  • Wall mounted hanger to keep it out of reach of my wool/felt chewing Cat. (Or the Box itself, but I like the idea of quick access)
I appreciate your time.
