HatBlocksPoland on Etsy. There you will find the downturn flange block you're looking for. Something like this except you'll want to order it with a different crown block. There are shortcuts to proper hat making. Try them if you wish...until you wish you hadn't. The problem with shortcuts is that one is more likely to get lost on the journey. It's usually a surer bet to stay on the well established routes. I studied and researched everything I could find on the subject for over a year, then I invested in basic, NECESSARY hat tools, then, some two years later, after much trial and error, I made my first hat for public consumption. Not a great hat, but nothing to be ashamed of either.
If you're young, you have plenty of time to get there. If you're old, no one much cares how long it takes you to get there.

My blocks from HatBlocksPoland are finally in transit. Express Mail out of Poland was shut down for 3 weeks and I didn't want the added expense of courier. He was great to deal with and I will give a report of his block quality in a few weeks.

I want to make a woman's style with a narrower down turned brim …..I am going to attempt to make my own flange or at least the bottom portion upon which I can mount my block. If nothing else it will keep me occupied in these lockdown times within which we are living. Will post the result....if not too embarrassing.

I hope this is the right place for this, apologies if it's not. I've been trying forever to find the hat worn in "The Great Hack" on Netflix. Looks like a Panama. Just trying to find out either who makes it or where I can find one that looks just like it.

Can't quite tell from the resolution but that looks like either a wheat straw Milan weave, or a palm leaf straw as opposed to a Panama hat.

I think you're right about palm leaf straw. Using that for a search brings closer matches. Is it a gambler?

It sure looks like palm to me too. It’s not shaped like a gambler, but one of the great things about palm is it it’s easy to shape and reshape it.

My hat it the photos of a shaped as a western, but it’s easy to reshape similar to your photos.

I have my wife's permission to use her coconut oil in our pantry but have yet to screw up the courage to use it on a real hat. One day I may be brave enough, perhaps on a hat that I have already screwed up in some way and the risk is small to non existent.

I say go for it bb. If done properly, the results are well worth the effort. Here's a brief pictorial from the past showing the process I use. Hot pan, 5 or 6 drops of coconut oil, luring pad. I use a hat spinner when applying, but steady even strokes should get you where you want to be.

@belfastboy do yourself a favor and buy Fractionated Coconut oil, it remains in liquid form.

Fractionated coconut oil is a product made from coconut oil, and consists mainly of two medium-chain fatty acids. It's been marketed as a coconut oil that can stay liquid in the fridge.

I’d like it to be more authentic so are there any good European brands? As for the hats history, how were they originally sold. Was it tailors who made them?
