Idk guys.I would be hesitant to use hairspray on felts as well. Reason is that I think the glue or stiffening agent of the spray (consisiting of polymers I believe) would stick to the surface of the felt, whereas shellac, when solved in methanol, would penetrate the felt and leave the surface smooth.
Not to be argumentative just academic.
All i know is how it worked for me.
This Vita-Felt Strat was floppy as heck. I gave the brim a couple light coats of Aqua Net. It’s still good over a year later.
The Borsa velour was a test for color change, stiffening and if it gummed up the felt. 3 coats of Aqua Net only on one half of the brim and the only way i can tell which side got sprayed is the bow side is firmer.
So...ymmv.
