Oh, I almost forgot. I wanted to verify the general procedure for negating any tiny livestock that might be residing on/in a used hat, just to be sure I have it right:

1) Place the hat in a receptacle (plastic bag, sealable container, etc.) to protect it from moisture.
2) Place it in the freezer.
3) Forget about it for two to three days.
4) Remove it and allow it to warm up to room temperature on it's own.

Am I missing anything? And does this apply to wool hats as well as fur felt hats?

Donegal, on the northwest coast of the Wild Atlantic Way --- Ireland --- is the only place they make Hanna hats. Hanna makes hats for Bean, Orvis as I remember, and some other big name outfits. I've never heard of any way to date them but you can call them direct and talk to one of the Hanna family (it's a small operation). I'm sure they could give you some clues.

Does anybody have a pattern for making a hat liner?

I guess really I'm asking if I need a more circular or more oval top part and whether or not the side piece needs a radius.

I just went by the logos inside the hat, I have also read that they are not the most reliable thing to go on but that is all I was going off of, like I said, I had no idea but thanks for the answer, the hat only cost me 7 bucks canadian lol

Hi all,

It currently 29degrees Celsius here (I don't know what it is in freedom units) and all I have for sun protection is an old baseball cap that's slowly giving up the ghost...

In short, I need a hat! Now I understand that I could go for a floppy boonie hat, but I want something with a bit more flair and style. What would be a good choice to put on my sweat soaked head? I'm guessing something wide brimmed like a Panama?

Panamas are great... but I've now also worn an Akubra Cattleman through a dozen summers. Yeah, it's made of felt, but with no lining, a light color, and several ventilation grommets, I find that it's no hotter than a straw hat, and it provides outstanding sun protection. I mean, you're going to sweat in anything under those conditions, but Akubras stand up to it beautifully. Mine was already over a decade old in this pic:



Anyway, you might want consider an unlined, vented Akubra hat from a dealer like Everything Australian. These hats are a great value for their modest prices.

Can anyone recommend a hat shop in London that can change the thin grosgrain hat bands on my Akubra Cooper Pedy and Akubra Buhman to wider hat bands, say maybe 2 inches wide. I live in the UAE and there aren't any hat shops here that can do this as people generally do not wear fedora style hats here. I will only be in London for 4 days before flying back, so I would need a hatter than can complete the job within a few days.

If you cannot find anything something that I have done that works; I have ordered hat ribbons/bows from custom hatters as it wasn't worth the cost of mailing the hat back and forth. (I don't have a hatter in my town either) They sent me the ribbon open ended but ready to attach. With even limited sewing skills I attached the ribbon work to the hat. You might even be able to find a tailor or seamstress in the UAE to attach it for you for a few dollars.

This time of year I wear straw to beat the intense sun - a Sunbody Hats

I tried on a Sunbody as I loved the wide brim but even in the shop I found it way too heavy and hot.
