Thanks mates.

Tom: It's a pretty large square silke scarf from Italy. My wife bought it for me.
Folding it is quite simple.
First from corner to corner making it into a triangle.
Then I just fold it in rather broad folds from the top of the triangle.
The silk itself is rather thick, so it holds up beautifully with just a single knot and some "puffing around" to spread it out.. Piece of cake...;)

Spitfire,

I like very much the scarf you wear - mine on display have a bit different setup and are smaller. The formal Cravats/Ascots ones as Smithy described and Slimportly dons so nicely are also available at my source but since I have neither the morning jacket nor the formal occasion where I could wear them - I havent purchased those.
The informal ascots to be worn under the shirts are good even at the workplace- they are way above the elegance of colleagues working in T-shirts or with shirts but sans cravat/necktie. Yes I had the Bel ami Italiansk, Film actor etc. comments but being a consistent guy I got accepted in them and they became my trademark.
I think this nothingness of silk gives some more formal look but does not strangle my head from the oxygen supply like the knots on the formal ties.
If worn with dark grey, deep blue or black suit and a formal shirt they can be even elegant.
Naturally not in a banking environment or on politicians at a summit - none of the roles people would like to play nowadays...
I think in this postmodern age day cravats/ascots do work well.

..."like" not "liked."

I have the privilege of working daily with the worlds finest fighter pilots. They don't like scarfs.

Really!?

Here's a company that makes "squadron scarves" for US Air Force units.

http://www.ramaworld.com/company.htm

"RAMA WORLD, Inc. has been screen printing since 1970 and has created scarves for the United States Air Force since 1974. The 22nd AREFS stationed at March AFB was the first squadron to wear our scarves. Their pilots flew around the world and by word of mouth RAMA WORLD started receiving orders from many different USAF and NATO units.

RAMA WORLD's unqualified support to Base Contracting and to our contacts from individual units has been combined with our commitment to provide graphically correct, easy to maintain and well-sewn, long lasting scarfs. RAMA WORLD's willingness to meet a client's schedule has high priority, but never sacrificing quality in the process.

RAMA WORLD believes each unit's scarf plays an important part in perpetuating a groups history, identity, colors, traditions and camaraderie. From the new forming student pilot classes to the high-tech squadrons to the missilery and radar units, each scarf is given the exact care and attention to details that it deserves."

Of course the current scarves are polyester......GASP!

Silver/grey ascot with my crystal pin (I really need to get another pin if I'm going to be wearing these things!), wide collar tonal striped shirt, charcoal suit with black three-pocket waistcoat, etc.

I went shopping at one of my favorite discount retailers this weekend for ties and cufflinks, and found that hip-hop clothier Phat Farm makes a number of silk ascots with matching pocket squares in a variety of patterns. I really liked a red-on-red paisley print but the wife vetoed the ascot altogether.

"Cravat Shortage"

Ive been looking on line for cravats, but nothing I have to have, imagine my delight when I saw a wedding Hire shop near my home!,( they sell ex-hire items) despite having a basketfull of shopping I thought I might go in and ask about Cravats, A steely eyed Matron asked me "What do you want it for?" I kind of panicked thinking, there may be a "Cravat strangler" on the prowl in my neighbourhood and not watching televesion I was oblivious. I explained, rather cowardly that I was going to a fancy dress party, its not as if I was after a bridal frock !!! for a fancy dress party so she rummaged out the back, for a while and then came back and said, no they didn't have any at the moment, she would check the warehouse for me, so hopefully!!!! I said in that case get a selection and I will then make my choice(s) , I am the customer after all!

By the The way while she was "rummaging" out the back I sat in the reception and perused this book, which was on the coffee table with the bridal magazines, no-one offered me a sherry!"
