There were sourcing issues getting a band that Art felt was good enough for his hat. As everyone knows Art is meticulous about his work. I am sure he could find a leather band you are interested in one.

No truer words Enough money and time and we can do anything. I have done a lot of searching and have seen many custom western hats with leather and exotic hatbands but have been unable to see the same with the Fedora style. I have some Horween leather as I have been making watch bands for awhile now and just bought some alligator skin. I just would have liked to make a comparison between the ribbon and leather in search for the perfect hat, you see I have a disease with my stuff and now I have added custom hats to my list. Last night I had an epifonoy and I must accept the fact that yes I will be getting more than just one hat.

Yes I know. At any rate I am so looking forward to working with you Art this whole process is so much fun from my side. I don't know how you manage to have the patience to work with what I would imagine is so many people like myself I guess when you have a passion for something it shows. I love places like this

Yes so far so good. But right now it's really pretty hard because there are no hat stores that are less than an hour away and these are only retailers that sell the name brands. I would have to go to NY or maybe philly to step into a hatters shop. As I would love to feel the difference between different felts try on about a dozen hats before making a decision, but i'm sure working with art everything will work out fine.

Keep an eye on auction sites, too; while you might not score a lid, you'll get exposure to a number of styles and looks. Of course, looking through this thread might really inspire you, too.

Original Journeyman then with a camo hatband for serious deep woods wearing...

I like these a lot... The 3rd down, darker brown, great hat crease, and the last on the horseshoe stand are my pick, good colour . Looks like a 3" brim on these. Can I ask what make they are?

They are all close to 3", but 2 7/8" to be exact.
The first is a custom by Cane Rod Maker, Lounger.
Next is cut-down Resistol western, see Conversion Corral thread.
Last is Akubra Campdraft.

Now that I look at it, the last 2 are the same band that Art made for the Journeyman.
Didn't realize I moved it to the other 2 but it is a good band....

wow thanks for the pics. they answer some of my questions. The hat I want to get will be more on the softer side I think. I have gained soo much knowledge the past 2 weeks my head is spinning. I probably will end up getting a narrow ribbon on it to start then maybe change the band later as I believe I can make a nice alligator band myself unless Art can do his magic. I don,t want the hat to scream western or fedora but something in between if that makes sense. I am sure once I speak with Art and go over the pics I have collected we will nail it.

One of my VS's is a traditional fedora design. It's been through a couple of rainy events. And though I am meticulous about keeping the brim in shape, there is an ever so slight ripple on one side interrupting the side arc flow. How do you reshape, or 'reset', the memory in the brim area to even out brim arc action?

Tom, nice looking leather bands!

pfisto22, I would definitely let Art put a ribbon on it when it is made and then decide later if you want to put a leather band. Art's ribbon work is truly incredible and it would be a shame to miss out on it. You can always put a leather band on it later if you want to go that route. Horsehair bands are very nice too.

Tommy, I would try a little steam on the wayward brim first. If that doesn't work then maybe try ironing it using a warm iron with a damp cloth between the iron and the brim.
