Handlebar Bart. Great side shot. what kind of crease is that? it almost looks wider at the top than at the brim! (reverse taper?) The bow is very nice too.

Hello, everybody. I was wondering if anybody's had a hat made in Art's RUST color, such as his LE Brooklyn. It's really cool, but I can't really make out the color. It looks sorta like a dark burnt orange with brown hues, or maybe reddish. :

I'm really liking the looks of this hat, but the only special occasion I can think of to get a custom hat is my graduation, and that's in 3 years! Maybe I'll settle for my birthday lol.

It's rust ;-) Dark burnt orange is probably a good verbal description.
Here's a side by side in sunlight with one of his Oxbloods

or this one taken under artificial light by Art while it was in progress

you should write to Art and see if he will send you a set of his swatch cards. Normally I think they only go to people who have ordered hats.

Thank you, and a belayed congrats to you for those hats, and kudos to Art.
I've got a while before I start worrying about custom hats. A 19 year old college student definitely has other things to swallow up his cash (oh that this weren't truth!). My birthday is a little over a month after Christmas, though, so maybe...
I'm not sure what that rust color would go with, clothing-wise, but I like it alot!

...Ya know, I do go to UTK, and orange is the team color...hmmmmmmm...

As has been said...

Many times in this long thread, Art Facett's work is excellent and the depicted hats are great. I recently contacted Mr. Fawcett and will soon be ordering my "Work of Art". Due to my work schedule (8 weeks working in Nigeria and then 3 at home on vacation), I will place my order so that the conformer arrives at home in late September and then I will get the hat just before Christmas. Here is what I was thinking might work & what I 1st sent to Art as an initial enquiry:

  • 100% Pure Beaver (regular weight) felt
  • Color choice: (1) Silver Mist, (2) Silver Belly, (3) Sahara, (4) Mojave (one color now & save the others for future purchase?)
  • Silk finish (seen a couple of pictures, I am saddled to a computer most days & the silk finish looks real nice)
  • 2 1/2 inch to 2 3/4 inch “snap” brim (no Hollywood brim please; like `em up in back and having a smooth equal transition to down in front) with a 5 1/2 inch? “C” (teardrop) crown & front pinch
  • Your (Art's) call: brim binding (very narrow) that matches hat color, or stitched under-welt, or over-welt
  • Royal Purple liner
  • Your (Art's) call: ribbon treatment, but something with some contrast to the hat’s color and Ok to get quite distinctive with the bow, but limit ribbon width from 11 to 16 ligne.
  • My name embossed on the hat’s sweat band?

I mostly "Lurk & Learn" on Fedora Lounge & a big THANKS! to all for my education. I only have one hat that I received from "PanamaBob" (and as often been said on FL, the one to deal with for a "Panama") & am watching a couple on `dBay.
If any of you "Hat Tippers" have any comments regarding my choices above feel free to let me know.

Damn! One PanamaBob and on to Art Fawcett!

I feel like I'm getting left behind. I've had Akubra FedIV, Fedora, Squatter and Campdraft, and am planning on getting a Stetson (modern) or two before finally talking to Art.

You, sir, are my hero lol.

I've managed to stop myself from looking in this thread for a little while, because it makes me want, want, WANT! I gave into temptation tonight and I've espied many more exemplary lids, but I'm really extra wanting one of those oxbloods. Lando and Bart, you guys have awesome hats there!

I wouldn't have expected less from a guy named Lando, you ol' smoothie!*

(* As a dedicated Star Wars fan since the age of seven, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to throw that quote in there, sorry 'bout that!)

I had long contempolated on taking the plunge for a custom from Art, and finally decided to take the plunge sometime early spring after seeing the latest and greatest from The Official Art Fawcett Product Advertizing Bure... err, I mean our esteemed fellow member Daizawaguy :D.
I puzzled over whether I should go for the delicious new sunset color which finally pushed me over the edge, or something I had planned for a longer while, I decided to go with the later - I asked Art to make something inspired by those nifty Panizzas over at RMR hats - in themselves very nice hats, but I was left wanting for something less stingy/more classical in style and features, as I felt the stingy features didn't quite suit my face & looks as well as they could.

After lot's of waiting and me agonizing whether I really did the conformer gig right enough (It looked like somthing of a very oblong egg with the frontside almost a square ), I finally got the mail from Art in late June that my hat was ready to go on the block, and a number of days later the hat was in the mail.

I was anxious for the package to arrive, and was dismayed when the package for some reason seemingly spent a whole week at the NJ international shipping facilities before finally leaving the country. This puzzled me to no end as I had never had such a long wait period with anything before, but when I got the package in my hands the explanation became clear - for one reason or the other apparently US customs or someone else had taken an interest in the package, because it had been opened at some point.

Unfortunately, whoever did the job wasn't very attentive, and in their process of dis- & reassembling the hat box they had put the cardboard frame that keeps the oval circle in place at the bottom of the box, leaving the hat holding circle and hat free to tumble around inside during the mail service rollercoaster ride. Needless to say, the brim was all squashed wonky by the time the package was finally in my hands .

Nothing a kettle and some copious steaming couldn't fix, but an annoyance that could easily have been avoided if someone in US customs/mail service would just have been smart enough to put the round peg into the round hole :V.

As for the agonizing over getting the measuring right, i popped the hat on my head and it literally fell into place, like, well, well, an egg-shaped hole into an egg-shaped peg. Despite adding 1/16th of an inch to my final nogging measurement for a slightly looser fit, the hat holds tight even in hard wind and without giving me the dreaded hat-head like some tighter fitting brethren :p.

As an amusing note, my nogging appears to be so oblong that after changing the hat into a centerdent, the minimalistic reverse taper in the front and back was enough to make the crown too (ob)long in order to fit into its own hatbox .

As a side note, for anyone looking to pick colors for their hat, I'd recommend browsing this thread and not only relying on the samples, as they appear slightly deceptive in their portrayal of the final look, probably because of their tiny size - It was pretty amusing, put the sample piece a meter apart and it will appear much darker than the hat, but put both right next to each other and they are, of course, the exact same identical color.

Drawing from the original source of inspiration, I decided to go with a lightweight Powder Blue. The color is probably closest in the first picture among the batch. The ribbon color choice was left to Art, with the only instruction being that it should be something contrasting.

Anyway, enough with the banter, on to the pictures!

I really like the the way the ribbon is "scrunched".

Excuse the cringy grin :p

Oh right - dimensions - I actually havn't measured the hat itself, but I did give art Art the dimensions of my favourite/best-fitting hat as base information, which IIRC should be around 5½" for crown and a 2 3/8" brim.

Thanks for the excellent hat Art, more orders should be coming once my hat fund just manages to recover first... :D

That's a nice look. I never thought I could swing a powder blue, but it almost looks white in some of those pics. It is interesting how some of the colors shift, and you are right about the samples being somewhat deceptive. Great hat sir.

I havn't tried matching it with much yet, but obviously whites, and light tones in general seem like a good pairing, which is what the majority of my wardrobe consists of during the summer/spring months.

As usual, colors shift depending on the lightning - indoors it really is a very pronounced light blue, but outside in strong sunlight it does take a heavy turn towards white - the mix of the color and subtle texture makes me think of fluffy cumulus clouds on a sunny day, or at least what you'd get if you'd mix the clouds with the sky :D.

I wish I could, but I'm afraid my budget isn't quite enough to take up the challenge :D.
