Art Deco Society of California

When I lived in San Francisco from 1985 to 1989, I often attended events sponsored by the Art Deco Society of California -- both social events such as the Gatsby Picnic, a Victory Canteen to celebrate the end of WW II, etc., and educative events. A look at their website shows me the Society is still going strong. Anyone here been involved with it?

Only casually...thru dealings with them in conjunction with the Chicago Art Deco Society. The ADSoC is one of the most active (and influential) of Deco Societies.

And ask me questions - I seem to be the most hardcore ADSC member on the Lounge. I have been heavily involved as a model, dancer, Board Member, event producer, graphic designer, fashion judge, lecturer, writer... since 1985! So you and I probably know each other!

I've been considering joining the Art Deco Society for the past year. I have friends that attend their regular (monthly? bi-monthly?) cocktail mixers in Los Angeles and hear they are a gas. I know they have an annual ball that always shows a great turnout.

You may have just sparked me to finally join!

The Art Deco Society of California is based in the Bay Area. The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles is based in LA.

But they are both swell, and the LA contingent puts on the fabulous Art Deco Weekend on the Queen Mary (Labor Day Weekend) so I will hopefully meet you there! I'll be at the piano in Sir Winston's on the last night.

What are the differences EXACTLY as to the membership? Does anyone know?

What kind of differences?

They are both the same kind of organization - founded to promote the awareness of the historical period and to fight the destruction of buildings from the time. The both have monthly small events and less frequent large events. The Art Deco Society of California is a bit older, but the ADSLA has been around quite a while too.
There is also the international organization that puts on the Art Deco Congress every two years in a different cities around the globe.

The membership prices are pretty comparable, although the ADSC is a tad higher.
The ADSLA gives you a quarterly newsletter.
The ADSC gives you a quarterly newsletter and a yearly magazine, the Sophisticate.
Both organizations are full of fun, like minded people and would love to have you.
Probably the deciding factor is going to be which one is based closer to you!

I must admit, the ADSLA website is way prettier. But the ADSC is getting a new web person next week, thank god.

I am in the throes of laying out the Program for the Art Deco Preservation Ball right now, so back to work!

I love hearing young folks talk like that!
You should definitely give the ADSLA a call and see what you can do to help. All these historic preservation organizations rely heavily on the volunteer efforts of their members. As well as putting on some swell parties, you could also help by going to city commission meetings and speaking out, writing letters, helping with fundraising - they need your youthful energy! And you will learn a lot while having a great time. I am what I am today because i got involved with my local Deco Society - no regrets!

P.S.: By the avatar you have you don't look/seem as old as you might think. I'd guess.... late 20's early 30's?

I got carded buying champagne the other day, though, it totally made me happy!

Hardly anyone your age even knows what Pickfair was!!! And you care!!!

It's great. Without younger generations getting involved, all history would vanish...
