Are you more of a vintage girl, or a modern girl?

We all dress vintage, but do you aspire to the life of a modern girl or a vintage girl.I remember my grandmother once reminicising about the old days when a lot of ladies never worked, they spent thier afternoons taking care of thier children, cooking, cleaning and playing bridge with the " girls". Today most young women go to college, and go right to work after. True some women are stay at home moms/housewives, but it is a very far number then used to be because of economic reasons. Which do you aspire to, the vintage girl, or the modern girl, or a little bit of both?

I would have to say I lean more towards vintage Nicoletta. I'm old fashioned and still believe that women should be home with the kids, however I realize that it's like near impossible these days. I do work out of the home 3 days a week... was 4 before I had my baby. On the same note I also feel women should do *something* out of the house, weather it's working or taking a class, whatever, to not go mad.

I think material things have taken over big time, thus forcing both parents to work in many situations that really wouldn't be necessary and it's really showing in the way kids are raised today.

I mean really.. I could get rid of this pc and the net service and save a bundle, lol! We don't have cable so we haven't had "TV" since we moved in here 4 years ago. There are tons of things we could do without, but since I do work part time I feel it's ok to have my dear computer! I feel I have a healthy balance, enough time with my child and play money to get him (and us) the little extras we want. We don't put anything on credit cards... if we ain't got the money... we don't need it!

Perhaps I should just end this now, I feel a soapbox coming on!

I have always held the idealism of both within me.
I suppose this why I often have personal conflicts at times...
as I get older, I do see that the vintage girl is much more
something to aspire to rather than the modern gal.

I aspire to be like my late great nana...fiercely independent
and a true lady!

Well, I'm modern outside and vintage inside. lol Does that count?
Sadly I don't own or collect vintage clothes at all, but when it comes to music, movies, books ,etc... then there is no one more vintage than me! lol :p

I'm trying to be more vintge on the outside, for a more feminine-ish look. Something to off set the modern me. I work in a male orientated world so I would say I was more modern, but there is the part of me that wants to be more of a vintage woman, so, as I saw on another thread, I'm a New Vintage Woman.

When it comes to my hobbies, interests, and pastimes, I would say I am a vintage girl. However, at this point in my life, I don't have the option of working inside the home (I'm single and still in school). While I certainly wouldn't mind working from the home once I graduate, the modern girl in me takes pride in going out and providing for myself.

That's an interesting question. If I'd lived sixty or seventy years ago, in a lot of ways I'd have stood out as rather "modern": I never had kids, I've always worked, often in jobs where men traditionally dominate, and I've always had a pretty fair independent streak -- but I'm not at all political about it, it's simply the way I am. And yet, living today, there's a very great deal in the actual modern culture that I simply don't understand or fit into at all -- and never have, going back to childhood. So, take your choice -- the Woman Of Tomorrow, c. 1940 or an independent forties-kind-of-gal trapped in the 21st Century. Either one would work.

I´m half of both I guess. I prefer the lifestyle of the 40s and long to be a 40s stay-home Mom.... But while I surely would be a great Mom I´d be a horribly messy housewife.... ;)

I feel like I am probably 80 percent modern and 20 percent vintage. I hope that's not a no-no! I mix the two as well... again, hopefully not breaking any unknown 'rules' here. :eusa_doh:

I would say that I have a lot of vintage tastes, but my lifestyle is definately modern, and I wouldn't want to change that for everything in the world...

well maybe if you get me a very rich husband, so I could spend all my free time doing shopping I could change my mind...

but dont worry VanillaT, nobody is going to bite you what you are :p

I must confess, I'm such a modern girl......
I don't want to be a mom ever, and there's no way for me to ever be a housewife. And I just don't really behave like a vintage girl would all the time... I just can't...
But, I like the 20's, and I think, I would be a great flapper :D So maybe, I'm a bit vintage somehow, if that counts(?)

Lizzie I think you hit it exactly on the head.

I got the kid, who needs me to hang around the house. I also can't stand not doing anything, so I work from home where it doesn't interfere with the family. When you think you want some children, let me know and I'll send him and my 11 year old sister to you so you can get that idea out of your head :D

When I was younger I wanted the career, a husband, and no kids. What I got was an 11 year marriage that ended in divorce and one child who is now a teenager. I always thought I was modern but as I get older I really value the traditional roles. I would of loved to be a stay at home mom, keeping a really lovely home and cooking wonderful meals for my family to be sure they are healthy. And if I was able to stay at home I would volunteer my time to charities that I feel passionate about. But alas this isn't how it worked out so I try to be as vintage as possible yet living in a very modern world and being a single parent. So probably 90% vintage in my outlook and 10% modern. Only about 15% vintage in dress but am working on making it more. Which is time consuming but I go a little at time.

Thanks for the post. It was fun reading how others view the vinatage/modern idea!

I would say I am 100% modern woman though I adore fashion, style, entertainment and manners that are vintage.

I have a number of clothes and accessories that are vintage inspired that I love to use as a way to share my personality and interests on the outside. I listen to big band and crooners and work and have a few people that think I am a little quirky or just have very colorful interests.

I have worked full time my entire life except 8 weeks on maternity leave 15 years ago and I thought I would go stark raving mad. While married and miserable, without a career, I felt completely trapped. Anyway, I am a huge proponent toward females independence. Not to say that I don't think couples that have a healthy partnership aren't ideal, but I dont' thinkI could do the whole stay at home gig and be happy.

I think I'm an old fashioned gal, when I do have kids I hope that I am lucky enough to stay at home with them. At least until they are old enough to go to school. But, I am fully aware that this might not happen. Between the cost of living and my "hobbies" I know that I will have to probably work. Besides, even if I did marry a wealthy man, I don't think it would be very fair to him to have to work all week while I didn't.
This question is exactly why I chose to go back to school and become a dental hygienist. First of all, my career is in demand. Secondly, I can find a job where I can work part time. For example, while my kids are in school, and be home for them when they get home. The pay is good enough that I could make a good contribution to the household, even working part time, and still be there for my kids. I have a friend who is working only three days a week, 6 hours a day, and supports two kids in a very nice lifestyle without any support from her husband. So, I know that one day if I were in her position, I would be able to survive.
So, although I've got old fashioned thoughts I am fully aware of the reality that being a stay at home mommy just might not work. Of course it would be nice to have a man who made enough money to support the family in the lifestyle I'm accustomed lol, but how much a man makes is never something that I think about when dating a guy.

My sister is a modern girl all the way. She has a Masters in Public Health and an MBA. She slaved for Pfizer pharmaceuticals for 8 years, with a very nice high 6 figure salary. She had perks like free vacations to Europe and tropical locales. She was the person who created, along with the CEO, the pharmaceutical assistance program, in which people without insurance could call Pfizer and they would help. She did a lot of incredible things for them. We all thought that when she had a baby she would hire a nanny and go to work the next day! Then her first son, Isaac was born. She took some time off, and went back to work. She was miserable! All she wanted was to be at home with him. She did everything in her power to get laid off, because she felt bad quitting. She finally gave notice. Lucky for her, Pfizer made arrangements to make it look as though she had been laid off, so she could get a nice severance package. They told her that if she decides to go back to work when her kids go to school, that they would be lucky to have her back. She really made an impression. Now, she's a stay at home mommy and she couldn't be happier. It's amazing how people can change. She was once a high powered executive for a large company buying her suits from Armani and her bags from Louis Vuitton. Now she shops at the Gap and goes to the park every day. She is lucky though, her husband is a Patent Attorney, so she can stay at home if she wants. But, the entire family was amazed at how much she changed when her son was born. Now she's the old fashioned gal in the family!

I think I'm half and half, I've been looking back on my mama's time as a stay at home mom, and all the work she did, the experts now say it's the equivalent of three full time jobs! (I believe 'em too) and my bestfriend's childhood as a latch-key kid. Both have their perks, but in the long run I think it's better for children to have a stay at home parent for at least a few years, or a parent who works part time.

Me, I love all the "Suzie Homemaker" stuff, I love to cook, and oddly enough clean(It's good stress relief) but only if it's mine, I draw the line at cleaning up after other people:mad: Given my dating track record I will not be married or a mother, so I'm modern in that respect, I enjoy the freedom that comes with a modern lifestyle. So I guess I'm really a toss up between the two, I'd be happy in either role[huh]
