I came across these scans from an old Apparel Arts and thought I'd share them here with you guys.

What era is this from?

And what's a "snapped brim Homburg?"

Sent directly from my mind to yours.
I'm not sure on the era, but a snapped brim Homburg has a flexible brim that is snapped down in the front instead of up all around. It also appears to be worn with side dents instead of just the traditional center dent.

I know what a snap brim is, but a snap brim Hommie is a contradiction in terms, like "military intelligence," or "jumbo shrimp."

I'm not sure then. Maybe terms have changed over time and at some point a snap brim Homburg was very much a "thing". To me it seems similar to a Fedora, but with more of a Homburg style treatment to the brim edging.

It seems to me, from the drawings of hats on the second page (page 53) that the article is from the 50s. It sounds like "a snap brim" Homburg was a new development in hats that never really caught on. Thank goodness [emoji4]

I seem to remember talk here on the Lounge of a brief period in the 20's or 30's when the popular style was a hybrid brim that was like a Homburg in the back and a snap brim in front. Kinda like a mullet. Don't think it lasted long.

Thanks for sharing, ruvort. Two really interesting pages of hats. I'm glad though that the University touch on a Homburg never caught on.

This has been a very interesting thread. Thanks to ruvort for linking it to me on another thread in connection with a Battersby hat I bought at a large indoor flea market in Copenhagen. It was of a very soft felt with a large brim (7cm) and quite battered. It seemed to be a Homburg, but due to it's soft felt could easily have been shaped as a Fedora. I had a notion that it was probably from the late 1910s to somewhere in the 1920s, but wasn't sure how to shape it. Ruvort suggested it may well have been made to sport the "University Touch" on the "snap brim Homburg" and linked me to his two scans on this thread.
Thanks to Frunobulax for questioning what such an anomaly of a hat was. This lead to Moehawk posting that he recalled hearing about such a hat from the 20s or 30s, which lead to AbbaDatDeHat posting a photo of Basil Rathbone wearing a snap brim Homburg type hat in a Sherlock Holmes film from the 1930s. (Thanks one and all)
Thanks to all you guys, I now believe my Battersby to have originally been made as a snap brim Homburg. I've steamed and steamed it, shaped and shaped it. Below are photos showing how it looked when I bought it and how it looks as a snap brim and now as a large brim Homburg.
Not sure which I prefer, but I think it looks good either way.

Very nice job cleaning that up and steaming it! I've got to say, although it looks good both ways, I think it looks outstanding with the snapped brim. It looks exactly like the photo with Basil Rathbone. If it were mine, that's how I'd wear it.

Thanks Jedi. The good thing is, I can wear it both ways as the mood suits me [emoji4]
I'm going to call it my Basil Rathbone Battersby from now on.

I’m really liking it as the Basil. A unique style that really gives a vibe of the early 20th century. Now I need to find one of my own.
