By "Alternative" I'm assuming we mean "not big band".

personally i can only sit through about 1 or 2 big band numbers before my mind numbs over. Too regimented.
Not quite so sound-alike before the swing era, when dance bands were better known for their styles than their soloists or hit records (not one record sold a million between 1927-'42.)

BTW, the Humeniak orchestra is using a baritone saxophone as bass line. Not quite Old World, but it works.

In performance Hummenieuk often used the traditional bowed 'cello or string bass for the bass line. Trombone was also traditional, and was used in some of his recordings. For some reason, though, he used a saxophone for three of his Columbia sessions. Perhaps there was an available studio musician hanging around the OkeH Union Square studio, where I believe these sides were recorded.
