Anyone know anything about this hatmaker Daquino?

That does look very attractive.

In the musical and associated fields there is something called GAS, which stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. This is when people continue to buy musical gear despite owning quite a lot of it already. For example, I have about 12 guitars, and I know someone who has about 20.

There must be something equivalent when it comes to buying hats. We'll call it HAS--Hat Acquisition Syndrome.

Tempting about D'aquino . . .

Brother, I'm an addict. Pure and simple. I've never smoked, drank, or tried drugs because I knew I might not stop once started. It's just how I'm wired. I've been through phases where I've collected fly rods, Smith and Wesson revolvers, and boots. It is as if I can infinitely divide a niche to justify filling it.

My wife is replacing the ribbon on this last D'aquino and although it is far from perfect I'm calling it my mid-spring early morning with a light breeze and a chance of rain hat for days that I'm wearing my dark blue Windstopper windbreaker. See, it fills a niche perfectly.

And I can stop at any time.

I sent D'aquino photos of the glaringly poor ribbon work and Luisa referred to me as "demanding." I told her I wasn't asking for anything and that I would not buy from her again. Too bad. I'm done with this company.

Too bad about D'aquino. I assume her business has grown and demand increased, which can make quality control difficult. Still, you have two nice hats that are certainly wearable and can be worn for work and casual outings.

I have been playing guitar on and off for 40 years, since I was 12. I know what you mean. I had limited my collection to 8 guitars and 2 basses for the last 15 years. Then I discovered Reverb.....

I’m thinning out my hats and I came to my two D’Aquino hats. The camel with brown binding and ribbon will go up for sale, but this gray hat is staying. I sent it to Art at VS to replace the ribbon...I still can’t believe D’Aquino shipped this hat with such poor quality ribbon work. I let Art choose the ribbon and I love his choice. The problem is the shipping to VS and back plus the cost of the ribbon work make this D’Aquino cost more than a Gannon, Phoenix, VS, etc. I haven’t had any desire to buy another D’Aquino, but the fact that this hat made the cut over some other arguably much better hats says something.

The final analysis: I would have been better off buying a custom hat from a domestic hatter and getting it right the first time.

I used to not bother, just walk away and not buy from them again but made a switch a few years back and thought any company makes mistakes and deserves a chance to respond. Whether or not I buy from them again is contingent on their response. Luisa has failed the test....miserably.

My experience exactly. Luisa lost me as a customer not because of the poor craftsmanship, but for her poor customer service.

And your experience absolutely assures I will never buy a hat from her as well. Word of mouth can be positive or negative to the bottom line. In this case, a poorly executed ribbon, and especially her poor customer service, has cost her a heck of a lot more than one hat.... maybe 10 or more.

Luisa made me this Beaver Fur Felt tricorn. I work at several museums in upstate New York. The fur trade was very big here in the 17th century and I wanted to show visitors a beaver fur felt hat. Everybody I show it to thinks it is soft and beautiful. View attachment 173114

I wanted a western fedora based on Pierce Brosnans in the netflix series The Son. I asked Luisa to make it in a medium grey with a 3" pencil curled brim. A 5" straight crown with a ribbon matching the felt. I was a little leary how it was going to be but she did not disappoint, it is beautiful, my new favorite hat! The closest I have seen to this is a 500.00 Watson so I am thrilled to say the least. bravo Luisa!!

Is it fur felt?

Ah, that is one fine looking hat and it suits you well. I, too, had a good experience dealing with Luisa on a fedora I treasure, and I am glad to know that you did as well.
