The seller at least should have called the hat....the hat formerly known as gay prince.

The hat itself is kind of cool. Would look just great with my laverder lace camisol.

Yeah, the name Gay Prince isn't really a name that would make us jump for it. But, that's the name of the model of that hat. I have a Dobbs with that same Dobbs logo on the liner and the same box! It's more of a 30's hat then a 50's hat. The felt ribbon on it isn't very common, but it was used in the 30's. It was more of a sport look. There have been so many different styles back then it's hard to say what's correct. I have seen hats like that in old catalogs as well. It has a nice looking crown and a raw edge. It's my size as well. I might keep an eye on it if you guys don't really have an interest in it.:D

You could be right about that. I'm not a Dobbs expert in any way. But, I do have a late 40's Dobbs with a liner that has a plastic covering over the logo and its different looking then that. The one you first posted has an older looking logo that to me looks to be late 30's. I could be wrong, but maybe the Gay Prince started in the late 30's and was still being made in the early 50's.

On the one up on ebay it only has stitching on the ribbon. So, maybe it's one of the first ones.:)

No thanks... I'll stick with "Akubra"... sounds more rugged and agressive then "Gay Prince".

NOW THE BAD NEWS
This is a smokers household , ( Husband swears he can quit any time he wants ) SORRY , Plus some items purchased from estates and auction , so have no Idea what kind of fun they were having before coming to me.
PLEASE DO NOT BID IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH CIGARETTE SMELLS~

Which is worse, mold or smoke?

I would have to say that mold is worse. Smoke can always be aired out. I have had to do that with several things in my collection. Vintage just doesn't hold on to tobacco smoke like Polyester does.

So, it should be ok.

As long as you air it out in a place where it will be safe. I will know you put it out in an unsafe area if I see a racoon around my place with a vintage fedora on. ;)
The other part of that is being careful to leave it in an area that will not get dew on it from being left out all night. Then it will smell like Cigs and mildew! LOL I did this with a hat that really smelled of cigs so I know. Fortunately it was a hat that did not fit me and was an experiment more than anything. I didn't care if a racoon did run away wearing it. LOL

Regards to all,

J

He he he, RaccoonLOL LOL LOL

Yeah, I don't know about a Raccoon, but I have seen plenty of Possums around! I think that they would go for that! Make a nice nest you know.

Any way, you know me and vintage buddy! No worries.:D

Here it is, 6 years late, and the "Gay Prince"shows up again. I got one on ebay for bupkus (next to nothing). When I took it to my 80 year old hatter to have it cleaned and re-blocked, his eyes lit up and he recognized it right away. I was told that it was made from the end of World War II till the mid fifties. It is a very high quality felt, and the hatter said it was their best hat for a few years. Does anyone have any more information?

I don't have any more information for you, but I do have a Dobbs "Gay Prince." It's a very nice hat, looks new, kind of a sage green color. I've got a Stetson in the same style somewhere around here, as well.

Enjoy yours, and post some photos when your hatter is done with it! (Says the guy who hasn't posted a photo in who knows how long... :eusa_doh:)

Cheers,
Tom
