I have thought of another thing that might interest people.

My best friend at High School and I were very alike and we were often mistaken for sisters or cousins. We were very close and once when she was in danger, I woke up in the night thinking 'She is in trouble - I must help her.' I looked at the clock and it was about 2am. I couldn't think why she would be in trouble and in those pre-mobile days, I couldn't ring her in the middle of the night. I felt really disturbed but went back to sleep. Later I found out that she was in a dangerous situation at exactly that time and she was 'willing' me to help her - even though there was no way I could.

We also once had a dream where she dreamed the beginning of it and I dreamed the second part. It was really clear and as I told her how strange it seemed it had 'started' in the middle when she said, I had the first part. It was quite a dark dream about someone trying to harm her and I was trying to talk them round. We both had our parts in first person, so I was seeing it through my eyes and she through hers. We always thought that was quite unusual and we couldn't explain how it could happen. We had a real connection and often I would think I wanted to speak to her and she would ring me immediately, knowing it.

Ok, I'll start this story by saying don't judge me. I felt really guilty for this for a long time, but I try to justify it because I was just a kid and that it was probably just a freaky coincidence...

When I was about 12 I was over at my friends house and we decided to play Barbies. We went out on her balcony with the Barbie corvette, a Barbie doll and 2 male Barbies. We decided to make the Barbie Princess Diana, the one male Barbie her boyfriend, and the other her driver. We pretended they were driving along in Paris, and then we pushed them off the balcony where they plumeted to their "death". (I don't know why, we weren't morbid children). The next day my mom turned on the news to find that Princess Di had actually died in a car crash in Paris with her boyfriend and driver. Some kind of Mattel voo-doo? I hope not. I'm still freaked out about it today.

10 seconds later there is (as plain as the two of us talking) "Not by listening to you two."

That is awesome!

I've had a couple of "strange" things happen, like a ceiling fan turning by itself (hadn't been turned on, no windows open, etc.) while my little sister was reading a poem written by my older sister, about the people she loved that had passed away. And seeing stuff that could've very well been my imagination. But I have heard some great stories...and I really enjoy them! Keep'em coming. ;)

Before the last big earthquake hit San Francisco, my aunt was watching the World Series game on the television. Literally seconds before the quake hit, she said wouldn't it be horrible if an earthquake hit San Francisco right now. Seconds later, the earthquake started on the television.

My cat used to pace, stare and meow at an empty doorway in our house. All I could think was I wonder who died in that doorway.

I've never had any ghosties visit me though. I think some people are magnets for ghosts - be it the energy their bodies put out or whatever. I am the complete opposite, nothing - no odd feelings, no visitors.

My hubby believes that if you think about ghosts or focus your energies upon them, they can get stronger and you can make them appear. He yelled at me the other night because one of our kitties was meowing in the other room. My husband asked who she was talking to and I jokingly said it was Mr. Graebe (the original owner of our 100 yr-old house). He told me don't even joke about it! He didn't want to take any chances! lol

I have more kid's stories from friends:

My friend Shawn has an 8 year old son named Shawnie who was terrified of going into the bathroom in his house. Shawnie said there was an old man in there who was always telling him to "Get out!"

So one day Shawn had his wife and son go out and he went into the offending bathroom and asked the spirit why he was scaring his son and yelled at him to leave. According to Shawn it worked because his son never spoke about the man again and isn't afraid to use the bathroom anymore.

Shawn did some research and he found out that in the 60s a man was working on the roof of his house and fell off. I got the shivvers when Shawn told me this. And Shawn's not one to tell tall-tales so I totally believe him!

Also, when my friend John was a kid he'd see a man sitting in a certain chair at his grandmother's house. The man never spoke, he just sat there. He asked his mom who the man was and described what he looked like. It turns out he was describing his grandfather who died before he was born! I'm getting chills just typing this. And I believe both of these stories. Had I not seen a ghost when I was young myself I'd probably be very skepical.

I have had a few of weird experiences as well.

When my grandmother was dying, we went to see her one last time (she was in hospice at her home.) She was pretty far gone the night we arrived, and I spent the night in a hotel with several cousins. She did pass away that night, and the next evening I stayed with my parents in her house. The house is two stories--you enter on the first floor, and the guest bedrooms are downstairs. I went to bed early that evening, and everyone else was upstairs talking. As I drifted off to sleep, I had the distinct impression that someone had just sat on my chest. I bolted awake and went back upstairs until everyone else went to bed; the experience did not happen again.

When I was in high school, my parents lived in a house that I always felt uncomfortable being alone in. I always felt like someone was watching me, even when all the shades were closed and no one was actually around. One night, I awoke from a very strange dream, and my room was darker than dark. As I was trying to orient myself, a black figure walked through my door and towards me, disappearing as it reached the bed.

Most recently, I awoke with a start with the distinct impression that someone was standing in the corner of the room. Of course, no one was, and I got up to and went to the bathroom. When I walked back into the room, I again strongly felt that my grandmother was standing in that corner, but saw nothing.

I have also been flooded with the scent of a perfume that I have never smelled before when walking into my bedroom. My mother has also suddenly smelled the scent of Mercurochrome, which her grandmother used to apply to cuts and scrapes when she was a child, but hasn't been sold for many years.

I'll get whiffs of scents every now and again of a flowery smell (not in spring time or any where around flowers) or something comfy. I'll be in my car with my windows up, or some where else with no one else around. Every now and then there will be a light flowing of feathers or light leaves. I don't know if it's a guardian or someone in my family watching over me saying hello, but it is always a comforting feeling.

I have a friend who says he has always been able to see the dead. When he was younger they used to torment him, but now they just ignore him cuz he ignores them. I don't know if its true, or if it's something he told me just trying to creep me out one night. He is that kind of person. lol

I've never had anything strange happen to me, although I was obsessed with ghosts and the paranormal as a child. I still am, actually!

My dad, however, is very superstitious and has seen a few ghosts in his time. The most interesting one I think happened in the 70's when my dad was still in high school. He was working on a tractor in the field across the street from his house in Idaho when he suddenly felt like someone was watching him. He turned around and saw a youngish/middle-aged woman in round, 1930's sunglasses and some sort of housedress on. He got the chills, looked away, and then she was gone. He definitely believes she was a ghost.

I also have a story about how we lived in a haunted house when I was 8 years old, when we first moved to California, but I think I wrote about that in another thread. Anyway, long story short, the people who lived there before us had an 18 year old son that hung himself at a nearby lake. Our house was always freezing (in the summer, I'm not kidding you, it would be 50 degrees inside). It got infested with bugs from the sick trees (no one else's home in the neighborhood did), water would leak out of electrical sockets, my aunt would voices in the kitchen at night (and my grandparents got so cold and freaked out that they opted to stay in a hotel), and my dad fell through the roof for no reason one night while trying to catch a lunar eclipse. So, all those things may have been coincidences, but I think what seals the deal is what happened the day we were moving out.

After the movers left with the last of our things to our new house, my mom was washing her hands at the kitchen sink and looked outside in our front yard. A sick, tumorous deer had wandered in and walked straight into our pool and drowned. I think that was a sign to never come back!

As I mentioned, I've never seen anything. But my husband grew up close to a French and Indian War battlefield and he would see strange things. Most notably, he and a friend were driving on a road next to the battlefield around 3 am and they saw children in full colonial-era clothing standing next to the road watching him and his friend as they drove by. It gave them the heebie-jeebies because if they weren't ghosts why would unescorted children be in the middle of the wilderness at 3 am?

boy scouts in scout gear on a night hike and they mistook it for colonial costumes? Just a guess.

One thing I always thought was strange happened shortly after my Nana died ten years ago.

I was very close to my Nana as my Grandad died before I was born and my other grandparents lived the other side of the world.

One night I 'dreamed' (but it seemed it was not a dream) that I was having a real chat with my Nana, laughing and joking about this and that, nothing particular. We were somewhere familiar but I can't remember now where we were. After a while it dawned on me and I said 'But Nana, how can I be talking to you now, you died recently?' she laughed the way she always did and said 'I have my ways. I can come and see you if I want to.'

I immediately opened my eyes and it was pitch black in the middle of the night and I was wide awake. I never wake up in the night. I am a really heavy sleeper. This was in my childhood bedroom where my Nana always slept when she came to stay with us. I felt comforted by what had happened.

People have said 'Wishful thinking!' but I have never had any dream like it before or since no matter how much I've been missing her. Besides, I know whilst dreaming that I am dreaming as my dreams are very strange and make no sense to me whilst I am having them. My best friend who 'sees' things but shuns it as she is scared of what might happen immediately said 'Your Nana came to say goodbye'.

Another interesting thing happened with the same friend. We were staying in her grandparents beach house with her sister. We were all sleeping in the same room. Her sister had gone to sleep and we were just talking very quietly in the dark. After a while we were both lying there and I thought she had gone to sleep. I happened to glance across the room to look towards my friend. It was very dark in this room, the curtains were shut and no street lights were shining in, no lights were on in the house, yet I saw a darkly luminous mass floating in a sort of cloud over her chest. I looked at it for several seconds as it swirled over her and it had an orangey - green hue about it.

I turned my head away and shut my eyes, trying not to think about it. Then I heard her say very quietly 'There's something over me, isn't there.' I hesitated whether to say anything but just said 'Yes'. She said 'I knew it was there. I don't like it.' She often has these experiences which she finds frightening and tries to block it out. I said 'Let's not worry about it. Say a prayer' and after that it was gone and the atmosphere was completely different. We didn't have anything else happen after that the rest of the stay.

If I may interject.

Your dream wasn't a typical dream, your Nana REALLY did come to you.

That thing over your friend was her spirit guide, or a family member nothing to be frightened of though it can be frightening. One of my friends has a orange glow around her a lot. Mine is usually yello (so I've been told.)

Mine is mothballs and bacon grease...my favorite aunt and uncle always smelled like that. Rather then being "ew gross" I usually tear up. Son who was named after them is reporting it too, so at least they can see him since they never got to alive.

I was over at a house doing these, and talking to my friend about coffee. Nothing was on this 90 minute tape, until I said "It must suck being dead. Wonder how they stay awake, cause this is boring."

I cracked up laughing at this, thinking oh my gosh, that would be me if I was hanging around in the after life! I can be a sarcastic pain in the rear!

I was an infant when this happened, and have no memory of it, but my Mom swears by it. She was friends with a neighbor (named Gladys), who she came to believe was a ghost. She would note strange things like passing her in a hallway of our house and, instead of bumping into her, actually going THROUGHT her. She would also notice this same person (ghost, whatever) watching over my crib in the wee hours, despite the fact that the doors and windows were always locked.

P.S. This thread has creeped me out; I've turned my light on, and am not at all tired anymore. Being paranoid in general, I know better than to start reading these things at 2:00am.

When my father was a little boy in the 1920s (yes, he is 85 now), he misbehaved in Catholic school and was sent to the cloakroom. A nun came back and LOCKER HERSELF INTO THE CLOAKROOM WITH HIM. No, she was not pretty, guys. Don't get your ears raised.

She told my dad, who was quite scared to begin with, about a boy named Johnny Dallessandro from her neighborhood when she was my dad's age. She said, "Matt, you pretend you're a good boy, but you're a bad boy. And that's how Johnny was. Everyone thought he was a good boy. But one day he was crossing the street and got hit by a coach. HE DIED INSTANTLY. There was an open casket funeral. The entire parish was there. Everyone was crying because they thought he was such a good boy. And the priest was making a speech about how good a boy Johnny was, and how he would go straight to heaven. Everyone felt relief about that. But all of a sudden JOHNNY SAT UP IN HIS COFFIN. AND HE LOOKED OUT AT ALL THE PARISHONERS. AND HIS EYES WERE RED AND HE OPENED HIS MOUTH WIDE -- A BLACK HOLE. AND HE SAID, 'DON'T PRAY FOR ME. I WAS NOT A GOOD BOY. AND I'M NOT GOING TO HEAVEN. I WENT STRAIGHT TO HELL.' And that was what happened to Johnny Dallessandro. Do you want that to happen to YOU, Matt?"

Somehow my dad remained a Catholic until he turned 78 or so.

Actually, not necessarily a ghost. I've read accounts, I can't swear by accuracy, of a woman who used to dream of roaming around this big old mansion when she was asleep. Well, from what I remember, she was from the States, and on a visit to the UK, she took a tour of this mansion. She kept saying: "This is my house!! The one from my dreams!" I guess she about scared the pants off the people who worked there, because they recognized her as "the ghost". I don't know what this phenomenon is called, or even if the story is accurate, but it would offer a second, and slightly less spooky explaination....;)

I believe this is called bilocation. I've only heard of it happening with saints, though. An interesting theory!
