As far as I can see, die casts are perfectly fine. I know on some websites, the term is forbidden but not here. I have a large collection of cars in 1/24 and 1/18 and even one in 1/12. The only reason I went back to model kits was because I couldn't find some of the models I wanted in diecast. Plus a bunchh of diecasts were just way too expensive.

Color-correction on the WOTC version of USS Princeton:

1/2 of the nine Independence-class light carriers were delivered in MS 14 gray, the other half in MS 21 Navy Blue. Princeton was one of the latter, but the factory paint is the all-gray of MS14 aside from the flight-deck. Eventually, I'll find a way to paint one in the colors Princeton sported in her final days and transfer the MS21-painted miniature to stand-in for another ship...

Rather chuffed about this, On Monday we had the call can we supply props for a museums air raid shelter recreation, the down side need to be ready on Thursday.

Thanks to the experience I gained from modelling and my fact I already have modelling tools, Edna & I pulled it off. The last late night prop making sessions ended last night & the props are all ready, awaiting collection.

Just discovered this thread. I play in 1/87th scale. Kitbashing, customizing, detailing and weathering with a bit of scratch building too. Here is some of my work:

This is a simple Walthers kit that I swapped wheels from some die cast cars and painted flat black.

Here's a tip if you have a diecast model that you really like, but the paint softens the edges too much. In my experience the paint is TOO THICK. Strip off and repaint. That's what I did with the blue van. The Green one I made into a passenger version by cutting the window openings.

A laser cut wood garage kit with a different roof and door, burglar bars were installed on the windows:

I'm digging this thread up as I see no reason to start a new one.
I was into model trains when I was a kid, had a horrible experience with a HO module group in my hometown and left the hobby in disgust for several years.
Bachmann made the prototype locomotive I'd always wanted to model (a ET&WNC ten-wheeler in the wartime black paint) a few years back, so from that I have built a layout in a back bedroom. It's On30 gauge, so I had to learn O scale stuff new but I found I really like the detail I can include. The layout takes place in 1943.
I'm going to be starting scenery soon but here's what I have so far...

Watercraft are fun too, this is a 1/152 scale model of the RMS Titanic I built last year.



I also belong to a local model railroad club, which built this 4,000 sq/ft HO scale model train display.

Thanks for posting your hobby photos. Your airfleet looks like a lot of fun to fly. Do you have a runway nearby?
Also, the HO layout looks like it takes many dedicated hobbyists to maintain. Your 10 foot long Titanic will be impresive when finished. It might be a challenge to find a spot for it on the HO table!

I am 60 and have recently begun dabbling in modeling again after a rather long (about 40-some years) hiatus. But, I have built a thing or two, now and then. Here's an "other media" model, series of models actually, of which I am rather proud. Basically, it's a Civil War (read "War of Northern Aggression or War for Southern Independence) gun section. All together there is an 1857 light 12 pounder (Napoleon) field piece, it's limber and caisson and it's limber. The 'other media' is "white metal" tin based metals like babbit or possibly what was once referred to as "pot metal" (an aluminum and zinc alloy IIRC).

The basic models came in kit form but, I scratch built many parts especially to the gun itself.
Here come the pics...
Details. The gun tube was also white metal. I about went nuts trying to closely recreate gun bronze appearance. The muzzle swell and rim face were overstated on the casting. I had to work it down to "original contours." (I accented the phrase "original contours" because those could vary greatly depending on who, and on which side of Mason & Dixon's line, the gun was cast.
The hand spikes. That 'stick' in the middle was the kit part. There were two hand spikes per gun. My two were made from bamboo skewers and bits of metal. I shaped the wood by chucking the skewer in a drill and sanding to size and shape. There was only one side hook supplied for the one hand spike. I had to fabricate that as well.
The sponge/rammers were similarly constructed with some cotton wrapped around the ends of the staffs to make the sponge parts.
The worm is an especially satisfactory accomplishment I feel. The kit suggested just twisting one end of a wire and a dowel and attaching an end to the staff. But, that just wouldn't be right since those worms had double lead spirals. I managed it by putting a piece of wire through the end of the staff and then twisting both ends around to it's shape. Looking at the front of the carriage (minus gun tube) note the dependent tool hooks. The kit supplied two as on right. I had to modify the one on left to it's (more nearly) correct form.
The kit parts as supplied. Note the down view of the carriage. The wheels were cast flat. In fact, the wheel rims should be splayed outward somewhat. Note that has been done though I admit it to be a little excessive.
The limber and it's kit box. The lid was not noted to have been copper sheeted but they were to protect from sparks so I managed that with peel and stick copper craft sheet material.
Last but literally not the least (it was in fact one of the toughest things to make) was the prolonge- a multi function rope supplied with and carried on the gun's trail. The larger view is of a correct reproduction. The inset is my scale version.
I am out of picture count space. I'll attach one or two more in a reply to finish.
What is particularly aggravating is both sets of vehicles have since been wrecked. Gun, caisson and limbers. My wife did for one and the cat for the other. I have all the bits and pieces (I think!) so in time they will be rebuilt.

My scratch built prolonge. First version too long. My reference was wrong. I initially scaled a 26 foot rope. Then I found that a later revision redesigned the prolonge to 18' ft.

When I was a kid, I used to make balsa and paper airplane models. Later, when I was in college, I became interested in sailing vintage watercraft. This is a half-model I made of a Core Sound, dead-rise skiff. I believe I made it in 1977. I took the lines from my neighbor's 18 foot boat and made the model using balsa scraps from my model airplane days.

Sadly, the old boat has been moved many times over the last thirty-nine years. It's suffered a bit of damage and part of its rudder is gone. But maybe repairing it can be another retirement project for me.

My latest projects are these two 1:87 scale model ships, the RMS Titanic and SS Nomadic.

Both are being built from scratch, and will be radio controlled with working lights and smoke when finished.
I started on these several months ago, and hope to have them completed and sailing by April, 2020.
