Beyond the Rocks!. Ugh. I love the desert, but there's something can be said about the country's cosmopolitan areas and the frequency of cool movie screenings. We in Phoenix have The Black Pirate this Sunday at the Orpheum, so maybe I shouldn't complain (once a month in the winter for a silent in an historic theater is not enough). I'm going cloche-clad, to be sure (hip flask sounds like a good idea, too...)

Have any of you bought character shoes from dance stores/online shops?

This is a style I think can look good on others but not on me. I prefer clothes showing off my waist so the 40's and 50's fits me better. I do like the hats from the 20's. I found this link when I was looking for something else and I think it fits to this thread.

Do look at the links on this page it is more nice photos.
I do like how she transformed the boring hat to something nice.

It made me also remember a serie on TV many many years ago called the house of Elliot. I did look at it just because of the clothes and hats.

They do have some photos on this page.

Thanks for posting those links, Annalai... I do thoroughly appreciate the "do it yourself" aesthetic in the first link. Creativity can take a girl far.

And I personally hadn't heard of the "House of Eliott." But I checked out the site and found it ran around the same time as one of my favorite Brit series, "Jeeves and Wooster." Great costume designs in that show...

BIG NEWS! I just got on Re-Mix shoe site and they have added some great '20s-'30s shoes. The styles look just like those pictured in Everyday Fashions of the Twenties!

I'll have to save up my sheckles for at least one pair, maybe sell a kidney or something...

Oh! I didn't realize 'Beyond the Rocks' was this weekend! I kept seeing the sign on my way to work, but never had time to stop and actually read the details! I'm going to try to go.

Those Remix shoes are heavenly, Vivian! Thanks so much for posting them! I have to start saving! I want them all! :D

House of Elliot (sp?) was recently released on PAL DVD (UK and Australian-compatible). Being a series about two sisters who establish a fashion house in the 1920s, there is a lot of gorgeous costuming. Particularly in the last few episodes when their business is established and successful. The Special Features on the DVD don't go into great detail about 1920s fashions. There's text about 1920s fashion and a few photos, but nothing to go ga-ga about. The beauty is contained within the show's costuming. (I must admit that the drama of the series wasn't my thing, but I still bought the DVD box set for the costuming )

I have bought a couple pairs of the lower-priced Capezios ('Manhattan' and 'T-strap'. I think they are quite good value for money, >$60, but if you buy character shoes (i.e. with the thin leather sole), factor in another $20-25 to get "street soles" put on them by a cobbler if you plan to wear them daily outside. The models I have/had are on this page (on sale now hmm!!):

Like I say, good enough for daily wear, but not if I was trying to be 250% period...something about the toe looks a bit off to me. I have (alas, pinching-tight) vintage shoes with curvier heels, I wish these shoes were like that...

I have a pair of the Cabaret. They are fairly comfy. I just wish the peep toe was a tad bit smaller. I haven't have them resoled yet, but then I don't wear them daily because they are silver. I have a pair of vintage 1920's shoes as well that I got on ebay. They were deadstock, and I think I got them for about $20...no one else bid on them. Unfortunately, mine pinch just a tad as well. By the end of the day my toes will be a little sore. I'll have to add a picture of them to the vintage shoe thread.

I may check out this "House of Eliott" sometime. Always on the lookout for great BBC shows...

I bought some T-straps by Leo's (cheaper than Capezio) and added those little traction pads to the ball of the foot area instead of re-soling. They'll probably get chewed up really quick by nights out with the pals. Then maybe I can train myself to be kinder to my shoes, and when I get the Deco pumps from Remix, I'll baby them.

I wouldn't show at some authentic-style event with my cheap-o Leo's... but they're good enough for other occasions.

And I fear my skiis are too big for vintage shoes... 9.5. I keep my eyes peeled on eBay, however.

I have a pair of Ferragamo t-straps, probably from the 90s that I found thrifting. They are beige with a black toe - very Coco Chanel. I wore them Halloween, and several vintage friends thought they were from the 20s. And best of all, they are comfortable.

I love the 1920s style and most of my vintage hats are from that era (see my avatar). Unfortunately, I take after my father's side of the family with more of a New Look figure so the clothes of this era don't really suit me. My favorite vintage dress is from the 20s though (display only) and seeing it makes me happy each time I enter my sewing room.

My maternal grandmother was a real clothes horse with a perfect flapper figure. I have some great photos of her from about 1924-1932 that I'll have to share with the board sometime. 50 years later she could still tell me what color the dresses were, where she bought the shoes, how long she had to save to get the hat. Tragically, she gave all her clothes away long before I came along so the photos are all I have left.

Oh, and the House of Elliot is completely worth tracking down. Very soapy but pleasantly so and clothes/hats to die for (I still lust after Evie's hat when she's picnicing with Sebastian). I've nearly worn out my tapes of the first series--I need to upgrade to DVD. I have bits and pieces of the subsequent seasons on tape from when A&E aired it; I wish they'd release those episodes properly as well.

I love the Flapper look as my short dark bob would testify ;)

Being only 4ft 10 inches tall with size 2 feet (american 3 I think) I find this look is more flattering to my size as the forties and fifties look would be too overwhelming for my small frame.

I have a few vintage items like jewelry, jackets, handbags, hats and the like but my real treasure is a 1920/30 gold watch brought in Oxford at a Antique Market. It is gorgeous and I just need to wear it to feel wonderful.

Another programme to watch besides "The House of Elliott" would be a Agatha Christie series called "Poirot" starring David Suchet. I am sure it has been shown on your side of the pond. It is absolutely wonderful, covering late 20s, 30s and 40s and further episodes are still being made, they hunt out and use all the Art Deco buildings they can find. Its eye to detail is amazing and needs to be or they receive letters and complaints if they get it wrong

My favourite episodes are the ones abroad, the linen outfits are so amazing on the men as well as on the woman :)

I'll second ADS hats

ADS Hats in San Francisco carry some wonderful cloche hats. Most are still pretty pricey, but I thought you might be interested in taking a look anyhow.

Juts the dreamiest ones. I'll try to remember to take a picture of my modern cloche tonight to post! It's perfectly dreamy!

And I completely forgot about the "House of Elliot" series. The last time I watched that I was in England. Hurrah for the BBC and all that good costume period shows.

:) I Love the 1920's also, from the clothing to architecture. Has anyone seen that TV series - "The House of Elliot"? (set in the 20's). Some of those British mini-series have fabulous clothing in them. (sorry if slightly off topic)!
