BellyTank, that's about the only thing I haven't read by him! I've just about got all his books and recordings (including the Spare Ass Annie one).
Bill had a strange style of dress didn't he? Sort of vintage but on the side of a bit naff as well....Something I try to emulate....

Jeff.

'Dead City Radio' is an excellent listen too. I think it fair to say Burroughs was probably quite strange in all aspects of his life. He has a great and credible voice doesn't he..?

BTW: I will be in London at the end of January and would love to have a get together while I am there. A "knees up" as you guys call it over there.

Thoughts?

I would love to make it to London since I'm only about an hours flying away- and I'm kind of a Brit. It may clash with my business travels though but I remain optimistic.

Any Brits In The Lounge ?

Hi !
I live on the Isle of Wight so I guess I fit that category !
In this weather, you'll generally see me each morning on the IOW/Portsmouth ferry wearing a brown Akubra Fed or, on dry days only, a vintage light olive Dobbs.
Because classic shaped fedoras are hard to find here (only the dreaded "trilbies") I find this Forum fascinating.

I'm going to be in England with my theatre arts class for 10 days during spring break. Recommend anywhere for vintage sartorial needs?
How about for hats? I know Swaine Addeney and Brigg are all but defunct as a hattery. Is Locke & Co. still worth a visit?

Swain Adeney and Briggs - defunct?

'Swain, Adeney and Briggs - almost defunct as a hattery'?

Who says so? I was at their establishment a few weeks ago for a routine (free) blocking and cleaning of one of my 'Herbert Johnsons' and I can tell you that they are anything but 'almost defunct'. Expensive, yes. Defunct, no.

Hi Ghos7a55assin,
If you've got money to burn then Locke might have something. It's worth a visit anyway to soak up the Gents Outfitters atmosphere.
I wouldn't even bother visiting Swaine Addeney and Brigg....
I would say honestly that you're better off buying on the net from Australia or America. Maybe when Marc gets the Adventurebilt European venture running it'd be worth ordering from him, he's the best bet for a European maker I think.
I have nothing but admiration for your style by the way. Wish I'd had the courage at your age to dress how I wanted, but it would've got me beaten to a pulp where I went to school.

Jeff.

A bit of trawling the net shows up some good shops.

You could take a few months to visit Harrods, not sure about the Gents clothing dept, though I suspect it might be quite large.

I found this one :

You will find in some areas of London a lot of independent, small gents outfitters that may carry an older range. Its worth a day or two just floating around the centres of the many towns that make the City. Also try asking a Taxi driver, seriously, the black cab drivers know more about London than anyone else.

What?!?!?! I asked them about hat-cleaning and blocking when i was there in May last year! The gentleman stated that you can't clean a hat and you basically let it age. You would assume that he acted that way because of my age, but this was stated to my principal who was buying a hat from them.

Oh yes, pardon the spelling. I checked the web-site. It is indeed "Adeney". I think I'll check up on them again and see if their Poet is any closer to Indy shape. Last time I went they were all crammed on top of each other and the ribbons were all really shoddy.

Does anyone know where to get a cheaper-priced, good quality 8/4 cap? My friend has taken a liking to my S-A-B cap, and I think I'd give it to him as a birthday gift. I figured I'd like to get it while I'm there instead of ordering it overseas from B! wear caps.

BTW, thanks Raindog. I can't wait to see what Marc churns out. I hear his felt is quite good, although I haven't even handled Steve's felt yet. I think I'd go to Locke just to see it. I would be afraid to visit Saville Row, though, for fear of being ashamed of being underdressed.

Vespasian, something in my gut tells me where going to hit Harrod's for the sake of seeing Harrod's, although I got severely ripped off for a pair of braces from them. I hadn't realized the exchange rate was so ugly. They're hats are all from Locke and I think all of their panamas are mislabeled for their quality. Most of them are in the tapered/stingy brim variety. But I haven't seen the Princess Diana memorial yet, so I think I should check that out.
