Now you folk in the colonies dont go taking offence at being left out and throwing our lovely tea in the water (We're a bit obsessed with tea over here, and yeah yeah we lost the war cos we were a bit rubbish and wore some dreadfull tricorns  ) but are there any brit hat wearers in this lounge? What's your hat style, what response do you get from the lovely British public (the ones with more than one eye and one tooth preferably). Love to hear it fellas.

Hi Vespasian,
I'm a UK hat wearer (Bournemouth). It's a recent thing for me, and reactions for the most part are favourable. I learnt early on not to bother much with etiquette (see my other letter).
The hardest part about living in the UK is the dearth of good hats. I resorted to converting a Stetson cowboy hat into a fedora (see Avatar) because it was a bargain off Ebay, and it'll do the job untill I can get a good one from another country.
What hats do you have?

Jeff.

I started some years ago, 1995, searching shops in Verona Italy when working there. Found a cracking borsalino that got debanded, re ribboned, then cut around the brim and has served as a very versatile fedora since that date surviving some stuff that would have made Indy proud. Recently moved up to a proper trilby (one for grown ups :) ) from hatsonline.co.uk, called the city/grey.

Ex pat (scottish borders) fedora wearer. The good thing about living in the US is the variety and relative availability of good fedoras/vintage suits etc. Old stetsons are ten-a-penny in my size. Very little else worth writing home about.

Will find out about responses from the blighty public when i return in the next year or so with my wardrobe of stetsons and 30s/40s vintage clothing which i understand is relatively scarce these days in the UK.

You wont be able to see the little tykes mate. They all wear hoodies and look like hobbits or wear the usual boring boring boring concoction of frayed jeans, frayed t shirts and tea cosys on their shaved heads. If you turn up looking like Mr Baggins Esq, or a Greek fisherman no-one will bat an eye lid. Stick a tie and fedora on and the lovely british public will say, whoah, what the, is this the end of the world? Do we need to put a brown paper bag over our heads or shall we just stare.....

Seriously, it does make me smile at the moment. My wife initially got a bit, no dont wear the hat for the world will look at you and say, "he wears hats that we do not understand, find stones and rocks and give him our point of view." The actual response I get is contained in the brackets ( ). Nuffink.

Well... I have a British passport- have dual nationality.
I'm from New Zealand- lived in London for 8 years and now in Denmark...

Wore hats a few times in London- I think London has a certain 'anything goes anonymity'- you can get away with anything- look at all the Goths, Punks, etc.
That anonymity is something I miss living in a smaller culture.'
Staring is a major pass-time in Scandinavia-

So much for the cool Scandinavians then BellyTank? Incidentally, are you a fan of Uncle Bill Burroughs? I just read the 'extirminate all rational thought' quote on your mail.
Now there's a man who could wear a hat....

Just had a good look at the Hatsonline.com site Vespasian, looks like genuine fur felt at a very good price.

It would help if everyone would put where they are in the "Location" field in their profile.

BTW: I will be in London at the end of January and would love to have a get together while I am there. A "knees up" as you guys call it over there.

Thoughts?

Yes Mr. Dog, I like Mr. B's work. Have you sread his 'Blade Runner: A Movie' screenplay? (the source of the title for Ridley Scotts screen adaptation of P.K. Dick's book)

I also listen with great joy and satisfaction to his later recordings with 'The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy'.

BellyTank, that's about the only thing I haven't read by him! I've just about got all his books and recordings (including the Spare Ass Annie one).
Bill had a strange style of dress didn't he? Sort of vintage but on the side of a bit naff as well....Something I try to emulate....

Brit hats

As long as we have some Brits posting, what about the quintessential British hats, the bowler and the trilby? I'm very interested in both, and find it is somewhat easier to locate a bowler than a trilby. Are trilbys more common there? According to Roetzel's book they are de-rigeur for the horse racing scene.

And for anyone, what is the real difference between a fedora and a trilby?

Boomerchop, I think the main difference is probably brim size. The trilbies in general look like stingy brimmed fedoras. Also, trilbies here tend to be made in materials other than fur felt, like check or corduroy etc....
I like a nice bowler, but haven't got the confidence yet to wear one. I did see a cool dude wearing one a year or two back, with clockwork orange make-up on...
